It’s been a summer of change at Manchester City, but Megan Campbell says the new-look women’s team have already fostered a great team spirit.

Last season’s double cup winners have been busy in the transfer market, adding six new faces to the squad ahead of the 2019/20 FA WSL campaign after the same number of players departed at the end of last season.

Laura Coombs, Aoife Mannion and Ellen White all arrive having proven themselves in England, while Matilde Fidalgo, Lee Geum-Min and Tyler Toland provide international experience from Portugal, South Korea and the Republic of Ireland respectively.

The players returned to training a month ago and Campbell is buoyed with how quickly the group have gelled.

“There’s a good dynamic to the squad – everyone is really friendly and enjoying it,” she said after City’s training camp in North Carolina.

“I think it’s quite easy to fit in with our bunch. People like to chat and there’s a lot of banter that flies around. It’s hard to sit there and not get involved.

“There are a lot of people from different countries and cultures so it’s easy for new players to integrate into the squad.

“A lot of us have been through it – we know how it feels to be in a new team with new teammates.”

Of the new recruits, Campbell knows Toland better than most, having played alongside the youngster at international level.

The 18-year-old arrives with a growing reputation in her native Republic of Ireland, a consequence of several impressive performances for the Girls in Green, despite her tender years.

That’s why Campbell is thrilled the promising midfielder will continue her development at the Academy Stadium and she expects City to reap the benefits of the deal for years to come.

“I’d been nagging her to get over here,” the defender added.

“I’m delighted the deal has gone through. She deserves it. She’s worked hard and she’s a great player.

“I’ve no doubt she’ll have a great future and I’m delighted her first professional contract is with City.

“Hopefully, she’ll crack on now and get minutes under her belt. She’s still young but she’s a big talent and definitely one for the future.”

After a lengthy injury layoff, Campbell returned to full fitness towards the end of last season and having signed a contract extension in June, she too is hoping for a brighter future spent out on the pitch rather than on the treatment table.

“My aim in the off-season was to be fit for the season,” explained our new No.5.

“That’s still the case and I’m where I need to be.

“I’m looking forward to the season ahead. My main target is to stay fit and get as many minutes as possible.

“We want to be successful and I want to do all I can to help.”
