Ellen White’s work ethic makes her the perfect role model for any aspiring young footballer.

That’s the view of England team-mate, Demi Stokes, who says the new Manchester City signing’s five-goal haul at the Women’s World Cup is the product of her unwavering commitment to the game.

White, who officially joins the Club on 1 July, is enjoying a fine tournament as the joint-top scorer and her England colleague is delighted to see the 30-year-old is getting her rewards her effort deserves.

“She works so hard and she is probably one of the most diligent players we’ve got in terms of everything she does.

“From eating, recovery, to training, you name it, that’s just Ellen.

“It’s no surprise to see that’s she’s scoring all the goals and performing on the world stage.

“I think girls definitely need to look up to her. Ellen hasn’t just turned up and scored.

“She’s put hours in and she’s worked hard and she’s getting her rewards now, which is good to see.”

England now know their semi-final opponents after the United States defeated France 2-1 on Friday evening.

Megan Rapinoe was the reigning champions two-goal hero, scoring in both halves before Wendy Renard’s late header gave the hosts a glimmer of hope.

It’s a result which has an impact beyond this World Cup for United Kingdom.

Phil Neville’s side are now guaranteed to finish as one of the top three European teams in France and therefore Great Britain will have a women’s football team at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Meanwhile, Saturday sees the conclusion of the quarter-final stage, with one ex-City player bidding to join her former team-mates in the last four.

Kosovare Asllani’s Sweden will try to beat Germany at a major tournament for the first time in 24 years as they continue their quest for World Cup glory.

That game kicks-off at 5.30pm (BST) and in the UK will be broadcast live on BBC One, with Italy v Netherlands taking place earlier in the day at 2pm (BST).
