It’s a decisive day in Group D, with the Lionesses having the opportunity to qualify as group winners, whilst Caroline Weir’s Scotland face a must win game against Argentina.
The Tartan Army need three points to give themselves a chance of joining England in the last 16, who only need a draw to edge Japan into second place.
A win for Scotland would likely be enough to guarantee themselves a spot in the knockout stage on their World Cup debut.
As it stands, Argentina are the fourth best ranked third-placed team.
Chile and Cameroon lie below them with zero points, but with a worse goal difference than Scotland and would need to register high scoring wins if they were to eclipse Shelley Kerr’s side.
The Scotland boss expects a stern test from La Albiceleste but believes her squad will be motivated by what’s at stake.
“It doesn’t get any better or any bigger a chance to have this last game with everything at stake,” Kerr said.
“We’re not ready to go home. The players feel that they haven’t performed maybe to their best.
“To get an opportunity to do that on the world stage, try and get a victory - that’s certainly what we’re going to set out to do and, if we can achieve that, it would be phenomenal for us as a nation.”
Meanwhile, England are competing to avoid what, on paper, is a tougher test in the last 16.
A draw or win against Japan would see Phil Neville’s side play one of the third-placed qualifiers, whereas defeat lines them up against Group E’s winners, the Netherlands or Canada.
Should England top the group, they could meet hosts France, or holders the USA in the quarter-finals, but Neville has declared his team will still be going all out to win against Japan.
“There were five or six permutations, now that’s been whittled down, and there are pitfalls in finishing first and second,” he said.
“We’ve got a long way to go. It starts tomorrow [Wednesday] night - we are going out to win it with the strongest possible team.”
Meanwhile, on Tuesday night a World Cup record was broken as Marta became the all-time leading scorer in both the men and women’s competitions.
The Brazilian, a six-time World Player of the Year, netted the only goal against Italy to clinch her side’s place in the last 16 and pass Miroslav Klose in the scoring standings.
