Pauline Bremer believes she is close to reaching her top level, having learned a lot both on and off the pitch during the past two years.

The German is in sensational goalscoring form, having netted 15 goals this season and nine in her last eight FA Women’s Super League games.

Having missed a lot of football since joining City in the summer of 2017 with lengthy injury lay-offs, Bremer explained she has matured as both a player and a person.

“I feel like the injury was a big challenge,” she admitted, “but it definitely helped me in many ways.

“One: on the football side because I think that when I was younger, I was going into rough tackles a bit blind. Now, I’m a bit more clever, deciding when to go into duels and when not to.

“It’s also helped my vision of the game, and personally, it helped me a lot because you have to be strong to recover from such an injury.

“I think you realise when you’ve been out for such a long time just how much you miss it. At the moment, I’m enjoying every minute on the pitch and I think you can see that in the goals – but I just like to be out there with the team.

“Knowing that and what it’s like without football… I never want that again. I’m so grateful for every minute on the training pitch or in games I play.

“I’m having a lot of fun. Scoring it always the best part of the game, especially as a striker – that’s my job.

“Personally and from a football view, it’s helped me a lot, and I feel like I’m getting closer to being at my top level. It’s great.”

Bremer’s fine form has been imperative to City’s success so far this season with Nick Cushing’s side snapping at Arsenal’s heels atop the WSL table and on course to defend both domestic trophies.

The forward bagged another brace – her sixth of the campaign – in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Everton, which completed an emotional week for the Club in the wake of the news manager Cushing is set for pastures new at New York City FC.

The German spoke of her pride for the way her teammates responded to clinch a crucial triumph.

“It was a really important victory,” she reflected. “Every game now is really important and we were really happy to get three points.

“It was a top team performance – a really good game – and a really professional performance from all of us. At 1-0, we didn’t stop. In the second half, we got the second one and finally assured it with the third.

“We have great professionals in our team who always want to keep winning – no matter what – and it was important to show that on the pitch.

“(The news) was quite a surprise for all of us – we thought we’d finish the season with Nick – but sometimes, in football, these things happen really quickly.

“We’re really happy for him to take the opportunity – it’s a big one for him. I’m really thankful he’s the one who brought me to this Club and to England. I’m grateful for that opportunity.

“Also, with my injury history, I’m thankful he didn’t let me drop at any point. He always believed in me and he believes I could make it after a long time out.

“As a team, we’ll stick together and play this season for everything. We can manage it We have great staff behind the Head Coach, including a good Assistant Coach who will take over.

“We all know how to play football so it shouldn’t be a big break in the team. We’ll stick to what we usually do and hopefully, keep on winning.”

Bremer was unfortunate not to complete her hat-trick, agonisingly watching an outrageous overhead kick crash off the crossbar, before she was replaced to a deserved ovation late on.

The striker acknowledged it has always been a dream of hers to score an acrobatic effort – a dream she hopes to realise in sky blue.

“That’s one goal of my life – to score an overhead kick one time!” she smiled. “I came close but I have to keep trying. Hopefully, next time it will go in.

“Sometimes, I practised them when I was a kid – just for fun. I had the picture in my head when the cross came behind. I didn’t really think – I just did it.

“I’m not frustrated at all (to be substituted with two goals). I would like to play the whole game of course, because it’s really fun out there and I’m enjoying my football a lot, but there are so many good strikers and everyone deserves to play. Everyone is training well.

“I was just really happy for the win for the whole team. Hopefully, I can get more gametime and that the goals keep coming.”
