Steph Houghton admits it has been “an emotional few days” after hearing the news Nick Cushing will leave his position as City manager.

Cushing has led City Women since its reformation in 2014 and has overseen a glittering period of success, winning one WSL title, two FA Women’s Cups and three FA Women’s League Cups.

He will remain within the City Football Group, taking the position as assistant manager at New York City alongside their new boss Ronny Deila.

Houghton, who has excelled under his management, says she wishes Cushing all the best with his future endeavours.

“It’s been an emotional few days,” she said. “Being at City for six years and having only one manager in Nick and to know he’s not going to be with us for the rest of the season.

“I’m absolutely delighted for him and his family. Good things happen to good people and he really deserves it for all of the hard work he’s done with us on and off the pitch - really transforming us into a title-winning side and one of the best teams in Europe.”

City are currently second in the WSL table, three points adrift of leaders Arsenal, and remain involved in both domestic cup competitions.

And with our squad looking deeper than ever before, there’s growing belief our season can end with further success.

Houghton admits Cushing will be a huge loss but sent a message to her teammates to remain professional and focused on their targets for the remainder of the campaign.

“From the team’s point of view, he’ll be a massive miss - he’s our leader,” she said. “And from a personal point of view, there’s been no better coach that I’ve played under.

“With his enthusiasm, knowledge and coaching ability, he’s one of the best in the world. All I can say is thank you.

“He’s been so good to me both on and off the pitch. I’ll definitely miss him but I want to wish him the best of luck with his new adventure.

“We’ve got a really big period at the Club and January is a vital month with big games coming up. We can’t lose professionalism.

“If anything, this will make us more motivated to go out and win, giving Nick the send off he deserves. To be able to win games will hopefully show how much respect we have for him and how thankful we are.

“And this Club deserves to be winning games. Hopefully, over the next few weeks, we’ll produce great performances and get some good results.”
