Manchester City Women head into the mid-season break four points clear at the top of the table, following a goalless draw at Liverpool.

A tightly-contested encounter in Widnes extended the Blues’ unbeaten run to seven games without conceding, as both defences held firm.

With City in such excellent form, the result will perhaps feel like two points dropped but in truth, Liverpool created the better chances.

Manager Nick Cushing was admitted a draw was disappointing, reflecting a slow start was to blame.

“It feels like two points dropped because we’re so used to winning,” he told mcfc.co.uk.

If we analyse the performance, it probably took us too long to get going and play as the team we are, putting pressure on teams around their own box.

Liverpool set out to frustrate us and we didn’t use the ball well enough in their half. The pitch is a leveller too and it does affect rhythm for a possession team - but that’s not an excuse because we’ve played well here previously.”

The Blues boss remained positive though, highlighting the bigger picture.

He added: “We just need to be a little bit better in the final third as the games go on but if someone would have offered me top of the table at this stage without conceding, irrelevant of how that happened, I’d have been really pleased.”

Cushing opted to name an unchanged side for the third successive game. The returning duo of Izzy Christiansen and Megan Campbell, who made their return to squad in the victory at Chelsea, were once again named on the bench.

City had ended their jinx against the Reds in Widnes on the opening day of the 2016 campaign, securing a 2-0 victory in the FA Cup.

This encounter was a cagey affair, heralding little in terms of goalmouth action as both sides struggled to maintain possession.

Caroline Weir created the game’s first chance, firing straight at Karen Bardsley before Shanice van den Sanden was slipped through but skewed wide under pressure.

At the other end, Nikita Parris saw an effort pushed wide and Steph Houghton’s long-range free-kick was comfortably saved by Siobhan Chamberlain.

Jane Ross also watched her attempt from the edge of the area deflect off-target, and so the score remained goalless at the break.

The Blues improved after the restart. Jennifer Beattie volleyed wide before Lucy Bronze had two chances in quick succession – first driving at Chamberlain and then forcing the shot-stopper to tip over.

Bardsley was then called into action once again as Greenwood tried her luck with a shot to the near post, and Rosie White struck the bar with a header.

The visitors piled on the pressure late on but struggled to break down the hosts’ defence. Christiansen poked just wide in injury time – the closest the Blues’ came to breaking the deadlock.

City now have a four-week break until their next game - the reverse fixture, as Liverpool travel to the Academy Stadium on 26 June.
