Pep Guardiola admits the late goals his team have conceded in recent Premier League matches are a concern.

The Blues have been pegged back in three successive league games by goals in added time, 80 minutes and 90 minutes against Chelsea, Liverpool, and Spurs respectively.

On each occasion, City had come close to scoring shortly before conceding, and the boss believes the quality of the opposition his team have faced all have the capability of punishing that profligacy - and did on those occasions.

“It’s true,” said Guardiola. “The last games against Chelsea and Liverpool, we came close to scoring more goals, but when it’s open in the last minutes, everything happens.

“Against Spurs, we didn’t defend the cross, we didn’t defend well the far post, but the cross is good and Kulusevski attacked well and made a good goal with his shoulder.

“Football is like that, you have to accept it - sometimes it happens in some moments. You have to try and break it and try to win games.

“Sometimes we want to score goals and sometimes we aren’t able to do it and we are tired.

“We play against top sides with an ability to do it. The players know it, we’ll try to improve.”

The boss also says it’s too soon to predict where our next opponents Aston Villa might finish this season.

Unai Emery’s side have won all six home games this season in the league and would climb above City if they claim all three points on Wednesday evening.

Guardiola says the intensity of a title challenge as well as European football can be difficult to maintain, but believes that in Emery, the Midlands club has a manager who knows how to manage the workload.

“So far what they’ve shown, yes (they can challenge) because they’re playing well and they’re playing European competition, too and they are there,” he said.

“Already 15 games (have been played), there is still 72 points to play for, but of course if they’re there so far then they can be there (at the end).

“I think in the knockout stages of Europe, Emery is used to playing every three days, as he did at Sevilla, PSG, and Arsenal.

“They play every three days, so he knows how to handle the training and mindset of the players.

“Of course they can be there.”
