Brian Kidd feels City’s recent success in the Carabao Cup is testament to the consistent hard yards put in behind the scenes by the players and staff.

Our 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur under the Wembley arch saw us defend the trophy for a fourth season in a row, equalling the record previously held by Liverpool since 1984.

It took until the 82nd minute for City’s dominance to be replicated in the scoreline against Spurs, with Aymeric Laporte rising highest to head home Kevin De Bruyne’s free-kick.

The French defender’s late intervention proved to be the only goal of the game, securing our eighth triumph in the competition and moving us alongside Liverpool as the most successful club in its history in the process.

Pep Guardiola has openly admitted that the Premier League and Champions League both take priority during our busy fixture schedule, but nonetheless also becomes the first manager to win four League Cups on the spin.

And speaking in a post-match press conference, Kidd highlighted the meticulous preparation that the boss and players put into each and every game, regardless of the opponent or competition.

When asked how the team would celebrate their first silverware of the season, Kidd responded: “We’ll be preparing for Wednesday’s game, there’ll be no let up.

“The respect he (Guardiola) gives the Carabao Cup, there’s no complacency and I think it speaks volumes winning it.

“Everyone’s focused every day of the week, he doesn’t treat it lightly no matter who we’re playing.

“He prepares for the weakest in the four leagues like the best, everyone is treated with the same respect.

“I’m delighted for him, the players and staff.”

While any win at Wembley is a special moment, our Carabao Cup success holds an extra level of significance with 8,000 fans granted entry for the final.

This was the first opportunity City fans had to cheer on the team in over a year since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and they were in typically full voice to help see Guardiola’s men over the line.

When asked if the supporters made it a particularly special atmosphere, Kidd’s answer was emphatic, and he is hopeful that it will set the tone for increased access in future.

“Definitely. I thought the noise from both sets of fans was different,” he declared.

“Every club has missed their fans because it gives the players energy and having the fans in there, you get a real buzz for it.

“Both the Spurs and City fans, it was a really nice atmosphere.

“Hopefully if there’s no trouble or anything we can get 1000s back in now with it being a test.”
