Kevin De Bruyne’s assist for Julian Alvarez against Burnley was his 104th in the Premier League.

That sees him move beyond Wayne Rooney in terms of number of league assists since the Premier League’s inception.

The Belgian now has his sights set on Cesc Fabregas in second with 111, while Ryan Giggs is out in front with 162.

De Bruyne already holds the record for quickest player to 100 assists in the league, requiring just 237 appearances to hit three figures.

That was 56 games quicker than previous record holder Fabregas, who needed 293 matches.

The 104th assist came in a dominant display against Vincent Kompany’s Clarets – with De Bruyne calmly sliding a free-kick through to Alvarez for the Argentine to slot home before the visiting defence could react.

It was also his first start since the reverse fixture on the opening day of the season.

Despite missing around five months of action and making just six appearances in all competitions this season, De Bruyne has been directly involved in five goals with one goal and four assists.

Since the start of the 2022/23 season, he’s provided 32 assists in all competitions, eight more than any other Premier League player. Liverpool’s Mo Salah is the next best on 24.

Here we’ll take a look at some of the other stats that stand out from Wednesday night’s victory…

Birthday boy

Julian Alvarez celebrated his 24th birthday in just about the best possible way.

He is the 10th player to score two or more goals in a Premier League match on his birthday and he’s the youngest to do so.

The Argentine has been used in a variety of roles in his 18 months at City, but has recently found himself as the focal point of the attack due to Erling Haaland‘s absence.

Whether he remains alongside the Norwegian in the coming weeks or drops back is yet to be seen, but he certainly demonstrated his prowess in front of goal on Wednesday.

His two goals were both clinical strikes that were as much about goalscoring instinct as they were the ability required once he got into the right position.

Coming from an xG of just 0.94, he only needed the two shots to score his brace and a total of just 24 touches in his 87 minutes on the pitch.

However, it is that ruthless efficiency that shows why strikers are the difference makers in matches at this level.

He now has 15 goals and 10 assists in 32 appearances already this season - an excellent return by any measure.

Bossing it

City were on top throughout the night.

In total we had 74% possession, completing 717 passes. 419 of those came in our half while 298 were in Burnley’s.

From 14 shots, we had an xG of 1.76 while Burnley mustered up a surprisingly high xG of 1.44 from their eight shots.

Despite that, Ederson was relatively untroubled - even though he could do nothing about Burnley’s goal.

We had seven corners to Burnley’s three and were the winners in more one v one battles than our opponents - succeeding in 53 of 88 duels.

Head to head

City enjoy facing Burnley.

We have now won each of our last 13 games against the Clarets in all competitions by an aggregate scoreline of 46-2.

In that run we have recorded a 5-0 scoreline on four occasions while last term’s 6-0 FA Cup thrashing is the biggest joint-biggest margin between the sides since 1968.

The last time we failed to win in this particular clash was February 2018 and you have to go back to March 2015 for Burnley’s last victory over us.

Premier League stats so far this season

Erling Haaland is level with Mo Salah in the race for the Golden Boot. Both forwards have 14 goals so far this season.

Phil Foden‘s seven assists so far in the league sees him one behind leader Salah in that metric.

Rodrigo‘s 1,922 passes is the most by any player in the division, ahead of Brighton’s Lewis Dunk in second with 1,842. Ruben Dias is ninth overall with 1,452.

Ederson remains on five clean sheets. He’s three away from leader Jordan Pickford.

Our 51 goals so far is the joint-most in the league with Liverpool although we have a game in hand on our challengers.
