Manchester City will face RB Leipzig in the last 16 of this season’s Champions League.

Pep Guardiola’s side will play the first leg at the Red Bull Arena in February, before hosting the German side at the Etihad Stadium the following month.

Ahead of those games, here is everything you need to know about our last 16 opponents.

HOW THEY QUALIFIED

Leipzig finished second behind unbeaten Real Madrid in the Group F table ahead of Shakhtar Donetsk and Celtic.

Qualification for the knockout stages looked difficult when they lost their opening two fixtures at home to Shakhtar and away at the Santiago Bernabeu.

But they won their final four fixtures including a dramatic 3-2 victory over reigning champions Real and a win over Shakhtar in Poland to confirm their place in the draw.

Group stage results:

RB Leipzig 1-4 Shakhtar Donetsk

Real Madrid 2-0 RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig 3-1 Celtic

Celtic 0-2 RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig 3-2 Real Madrid

Shakhtar Donetsk 0-4 RB Leipzig

LEAGUE FORM

Leipzig sit sixth in the Bundesliga table but are just six points behind leaders Bayern Munich at the time of writing.

They have won six of their 13 matches so far, including a 3-0 home victory over City’s group stage opponents Borussia Dortmund.

And they are unbeaten in their last six matches with games against Freiburg and Werder Bremen before a World Cup break that will see them not play again until facing Bayern Munich on 20 January.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS

The two clubs met for the first time at the group stage of last season’s Champions League competition.

We went on to top Group A by kicking off the tournament with a 6-3 victory at the Etihad Stadium when we had six different goalscorers while Christopher Nkunku scored hat-trick for the visitors.

Our qualification was secured by the final group game, which was played behind closed doors because of a partial lockdown after a rise in COVID-19 rates in Saxony.

Despite a late goal from Riyad Mahrez, we were beaten 2-1 in a game that also saw Kyle Walker given a straight red card.

CITY LINKS

Former City left-back Angelino rejoined RB Leipzig on loan in January 2020 after making 12 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side earlier in the campaign.

The move became permanent in the summer but he is currently on loan at fellow Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.

MANAGER

Former Borussia Dortmund coach Marco Rose became the club’s new head coach in September.

He was in charge at Borussia Monchengladbach when they were paired with City at the last-16 stage in 2021.

We won the first leg 2-0 in Germany and triumphed by the same scoreline back at the Etihad Stadium.

TOP SCORER

France international Nkunku is currently leading the goalscoring charts across the Bundesliga with 11 goals from 13 appearances.

The 24-year-old also has another three goals in the Champions League as does Portuguese team-mate Andre Silva who scored twice in the home win over Celtic.

EUROPEAN HISTORY

RB Leipzig have become regulars in the Champions League in recent years having qualified for the tournament in five of the last seven years.

Their best-ever run in the competition was in 2019/20 when they reached the semi-finals before losing to Paris Saint-Germain in a one-off game.

They failed to make it out of the group stage last season and moved into the Europa League where they made it all the way to the semi-finals before losing to Rangers.

STADIUM

RB Leipzig have played their home games at the Red Bull Arena in the centre of the city since 2010.

It has a capacity of 47,069, including space for 10,500 fans to stand.
