Pep Guardiola’s side were placed in Group G for our twelfth-consecutive campaign in Europe’s elite club cup competition, which will begin in the week commencing 5 September.
City have faced all three teams before, though this is the first time we have met Copenhagen in the Champions League.
Here is everything you need to know about our opponents…
Sevilla
Manager
Former Spain boss Julen Lopetegui is into his fourth season in charge and has guided his team to Champions League qualification in each of his previous three campaigns.
Sevilla have lifted one trophy in that time, the 2019/20 Europa League, when they beat Inter Milan 3-2 in the final.
A goalkeeper during his playing career, he was a Barcelona team-mate of Pep Guardiola and Txiki Begiristain.
Best European finish: European Cup / Champions League quarter-finalists in 1957/58 and 2017/18. They have won the European League a record six times.
2021/22 league position: Fourth.
2021/22 top scorer: Rafa Mir – 13 goals in all competitions.
2021/22 European campaign
Sevilla failed to progress beyond the group stage last season, finishing third in Group G behind Lille and Salzburg.
That ensured their qualification for the Europa League and, after beating Dinamo Zagreb in the knockout round play-offs, they suffered a 2-1 aggregate defeat to West Ham United.
Form guide
At the time of writing, Sevilla are only two games into their La Liga season. They are yet to win, having lost 2-1 to Osasuna on the opening day before a 1-1 draw at home to Valladolid.
Previous meetings
Our only previous competitive meeting with Sevilla came in the 2015/16 group stage, when Manuel Pellegrini’s side won home and away.
Kevin De Bruyne scored a 90th minute winner to secure three points at the Etihad Stadium, before a brilliant attacking display saw us qualify for the knockout stage with a 3-1 win in Spain, where Raheem Sterling, Fernando and Wilfried Bony were on target.
Borussia Dortmund
Manager
Edin Terzic is in his first season in charge of the Black and Yellows, having replaced Marco Rose at the end of last season.
The German’s career at Dortmund began in the Academy when Jurgen Klopp was in charge. He returned in 2018 as Lucien Favre’s assistant and became caretaker boss in the second half of the 2020/21 campaign following Favre’s sacking, guiding the team to the German Cup.
He spent last season as Technical Director.
Best European finish: Champions League winners 1996/97.
2021/22 league position: Second.
2021/22 top scorer: Erling Haaland – 29 goals in all competitions.
2021/22 European campaign
Dortmund finished third in Group C, behind Ajax and Sporting and ahead of Besiktas to qualify for the Europa League.
They were drawn against Rangers in the knockout round playoffs of Europe’s secondary club cup competition, losing 6-4 on aggregate to the eventual finalists.
Form guide
The BVB sit seventh in the Budesliga after their opening three games, with two wins and a defeat on their record.
They opened with a 1-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen and beat Freiburg 3-1 before conceding three goals in six minutes to throw away a two-goal lead against Werder Bremen in added time.
Previous meetings
This will be the third time we have faced Dortmund in the Champions League.
In 2012/13 we failed to beat them in the group stage, drawing 1-1 at home and losing 1-0 in Germany and, two seasons ago, we record a 2-1 victory home and away to progress to the semi-finals of the competition.
FC Copenhagen
Manager
Jess Thorup is the man in charge at the Parken Stadium.
The Dane was appointed in November 2020 and guided the Lions to the Superliga title in his second season.
It was the second time he had won the Danish league, having also done so with Midtjylland in 2017/18.
As a player he represented Odense Boldklub and Esbjerg FB in his homeland, and also enjoyed spells in Germany, Norway and Austria.
Best European finish: Round of 16 2010/2011.
2021/22 league position: Champions.
2021/22 top scorer: Pep Biel – 18 goals in all competitions.
2021/22 European campaign
Copenhagen participated in the UEFA Conference League last season, entering in the qualifying rounds and progressing to the last 16.
They won five out of six to top Group F ahead of PAOK, Slovan Bratislava and Lincoln Red Imps, but were knocked out in the next round after an 8-4 aggregate defeat to PSV Eindhoven.
Form guide
Copenhagen won three and lost three of their opening six games, which left them fifth in the Danish Superliga at the time the group stage draw was made.
Previous meetings
We played Copenhagen in the Round of 32 of the 2009/10 UEFA Cup.
Academy graduates Nedum Onuoha and Stephen Ireland were on target in a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Denmark and Craig Bellamy scored a brace in a 2-1 win in the return fixture to send us through to the next round with a 4-3 aggregate victory.
