City fell behind in the first half to an incisive Chelsea break finished off by former Blue Raheem Sterling.
Although we improved greatly in the second half, it looked like we may fall to defeat until Rodrigo’s deflected strike in the 83rd minute rescued a point.
CITY 1-1 CHELSEA | MATCH REPORT
We chased a winner in the closing stages but it wasn’t to be – ending a run of 11 consecutive wins in all competitions.
However, former City captain Dunne says that ability to fight until the very end is a sign of champions.
If we’re to come out on top of our battle with Liverpool and Arsenal and lift a record fourth straight Premier League title, Dunne believes this draw could feel like a point gained as opposed to two dropped.
“We created chances to win the game but it wasn’t to be,” said Dunne after the game on Matchday Live.
“At that point you don’t lose it, you pick up a point and you move on.
“That’s the way they have to look at it. It’s not an awful performance, City weren’t at their best but they dig in and that’s the sign of champions. They found a way to score a goal.
“They’re the important points that managers will look back on and say that has helped us win the league.
“We weren’t at our best against a good team performing really well but we’ve still managed to get something.”
Dunne was joined in the Matchday Live studio by former City goalkeeper Nicky Weaver.
Weaver agreed with Dunne’s assessment and reiterated the difficulty of putting a winning run together.
“Pep spoke about it in the week – winning a football match in the Premier League isn’t easy,” he said.
“Chelsea played really well and they frustrated City at times and they went defensive.
“Once we got the equaliser, you thought we might get the winner but it didn’t happen.
“You can’t just turn up here every week and expect to win. It is a point earned, I don’t think it’s two points dropped.
“It’s on to Brentford now and you’ve got to pick up three points in that one.”
