City made it through to Round Four of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 victory over Chelsea.

Our win at the Etihad came courtesy of goals from Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez.

Below, we take you through some of the key stats from the midweek game.

MAHREZ ON TARGET

It’s fair to say that Riyad Mahrez is a cup specialist – and we have the numbers to prove it.

Since 2017/18, in a table of ‘Most Goals in League Cup and FA Cup games’, Mahrez comes in second with 13.

Interestingly, too, four names of the ‘Top 5’ have City connections.
Gabriel Jesus, who was with us from 2017-22, is top with 17, with all of those goals coming in the blue of City.

Phil Foden is fourth with 12 alongside Kelechi Iheanacho, who played for the senior team between 2015-17.

POSITIVE PEP

Pep Guardiola has the best win percentage of any manager in League Cup history.

That’s for bosses who have picked up a minimum of 20 victories.

Guardiola has won 78% of his 28 games in the competition (W21 D5 L2).

Of course, he’s also won four League Cups during his time in charge.

They came in 2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 and 2020/21.

Victory over Chelsea in the 2022/23 Round Three this week will have him eyeing another trophy in the competition after the World Cup.

going through the gears

Stefan Ortega Moreno may have been voted Man of the Match in the Etihad Stadium but Jack Grealish was close behind.

In fact, he was voted star man by Sky Sports following their coverage of our win over Chelsea.

And no surprise given his all-action display throughout the 90 minutes.

Jack was here, there and everywhere in a bid to power City through to Round Four – as you can see from Heat Map.

Jack has already been instructed what he needs to do for his next goal celebration, with 11-year-old Finlay handing him a dance to showcase.

He didn’t get chance to show it off in this game but it wasn’t for the want of trying.

TOP TEN

City have a hugely impressive record when it comes to progressing in the League Cup.

We have made it through from each of our last 10 League Cup Round Three ties, scoring 36 goals in those games.

It’s been even in terms of venues, too, with five victories coming at home and five coming away.

Our last elimination at the Round Three stage was in 2012/13 against Aston Villa.

Loving the League Cup

We have a great relationship with the League Cup having won four of the last five editions of the competition.

And the stats surrounding us competing recently showcase that.

We have won 13 of their last 16 home games in the League Cup (D1 L2), scoring 56 goals in the process and at an average of 3.5 per match.

We have, also, only lost one of our last 15 League Cup matches against sides from the same division (W11 D3), winning each of the last six such fixtures in a row.
