PEP GUARDIOLA PREVIEW
Pep Guardiola declared the ‘soul and spirit’ of his City team was there as the manager looked ahead to Sunday’s huge Etihad derby with Manchester United.
The reigning champions will welcome our Manchester rivals to the Etihad on the back of what has been a tough run of recent results, with an injury-hit City having won one of our last 10 fixtures across all competitions.
It has made for a challenging period with the City boss having to select from a depleted squad.
But addressing the media at Friday’s pre-match press conference, Guardiola spoke with passion and pride as he both looked ahead to Sunday and reflected on seeking to help navigate a quick return to winning ways.
“The soul and spirit of this team is there,” Guardiola declared.
“I’m sad for the players because of the way they run and fight in the circumstances.
“And, of course, our fans maybe they’re sad [right now]. I understand it - we’re not used to it.
“I know and completely understand our fans may be sad. This group of players have made an era and done things no-one else has done.
“Broken records. I just call the supporters to be there until the end.
“This group of players, they will support them to the end because they deserve it.”
PREVIOUS MEETING
Our last home Manchester derby in the league was in March 2024, where City had fallen behind to a thunderous Marcus Rashford shot on eight minutes - against the run of play - and spent the next 50 minutes or so trying to find a way past a resolute United back-line.
But Phil Foden levelled on 56 minutes with a screamer into the top corner from 20 yards, then scored a delightful second ten minutes from the end of normal time.
Erling Haaland wrapped up the victory with a clinical finish following excellent work by Rodrigo to make it 3-1 in added time.
We have since faced United at Wembley twice, losing the FA Cup final in May, before securing a penalty shootout win in the Community Shield in August.
LAST TIME OUT
Our last league encounter ended in an entertaining 2-2 draw away to Crystal Palace, with City fighting from behind twice to earn a draw with ten men, after Rico Lewis was sent off.
On Wednesday night, we fell to UEFA Champions League defeat against Juventus in Turin, with Dusan Vlahovic and Weston McKennie getting the goals for the hosts.

As for United, they fell to their first home league defeat under new manager Ruben Amorim, as Nottingham Forest claimed an impressive 3-2 victory at Old Trafford last weekend.
Amorim’s team are also in Europa League action on Thursday evening, travelling to Czech Republic to take on Viktoria Plzen.
