Erling Haaland became just the third player in history – and the first for nine years – to score five goals in a single UEFA Champions League game as City beat RB Leipzig 7-0 on Tuesday.

Luiz Adriano was the last player to achieve the feat back in October 2014 as Shakhtar Donetsk beat BATE Borisov 7-0 away from home.

That came two years after Lionel Messi’s five for Barcelona against Bayer Leverkusen in a 7-1 win at the Camp Nou.

Haaland has now scored 10 goals in the UEFA Champions League this season, the most by a City player in a single season in the competition.

Our 8-1 aggregate victory over RB Leipzig means we have qualified for the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the sixth successive season.

Haaland’s five goals means his remarkable scoring record in Europe’s elite knockout competition continues. He now has 33 goals in 25 Champions League games, reaching the 30-goal milestone in fewer matches than any other player in the competition’s history.

He is also the youngest player to reach 30 goals in the history of the competition (22y 236d).

And the Norwegian has now scored 39 goals in all competitions this season - breaking Tommy Johnson’s club record of 38 in a single season set in 1928/29.
