Khaldoon Al Mubarak stressed this summer that the Etihad had become what he always wanted it to be – the team’s 12th man.

The Etihad Stadium celebrates its 20th anniversary today – and in that two-decade spell it has been our home for 20 major triumphs.

There have been seven Premier League titles, three FA Cups, six League Cups, three Community Shields and one Champions League.

The past 2022/23 season saw us win a remarkable Treble and the Chairman was hugely impressed with the level of support at our home stadium across the campaign, especially in our successful battles in Europe.

With memorable wins over RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the knockout stages of the competition, the Chairman insisted that the way the fans electrified the Etihad had a big part to play in our resounding success.

Speaking in his annual City Studios interview at the conclusion of the season, he told us: “The atmosphere at the Etihad this year really, and I think it’s something for all of us to take for the future, it’s become truly a fortress.

“What the fans give to the team spills over in the performances. Look at Real Madrid semi-finals 4-0, Bayern Munich quarter-finals 3-0, Leipzig Round of 16 7-0.

“And I hope and I wish that we can just take this now to another level.

“The Etihad is becoming what we always hoped for, which is truly the 12th man we always needed.

“And the players appreciate it. The coaches appreciate it. We appreciate it, the management team.

“Thank you. Really. Thank you to the fans for that. And exciting times, exciting times.”
