In the wake of a stellar 2020/21 campaign which saw Pep Guardiola’s side regain the Premier League title, retain the Carabao Cup and reach a first-ever Champions League final, the hugely experienced holding midfielder has penned a new 12-month contract.
The latest deal will see Fernandinho embark on a ninth season at the Etihad and take him through to the summer of 2022.
And, looking ahead to the resumption of action in August, the City captain made it clear that his hunger and desire to help the Club secure yet more silverware burns as brightly as ever.
“Well, obviously in my head and my mind, the job is not done yet,” the Brazilian asserted.
“And so that’s why I decided to stay here another year and try to help the team and the Club to achieve the goals that they’re looking for.
“In my point of view, we can do that, there’s still places to improve and to get those targets.
“I think now, being Premier League champions and runners-up in the Champions League, I think you just need to keep going the same, doing the same things and you cannot stop the process we started last season.
“I think in my mind it’s to still do the same. I think you cannot change much
“Obviously you need to improve a little bit in some spots, but for sure, I think you are in the right way.”
Having assumed the captaincy from David Silva at the start of the 2020/21 campaign, Fernandinho garnered widespread praise for the way he led by example throughout all the many challenges of last season – both on and off the pitch.

Despite turning 36 last month, with his superb consistency and high standard of performances, Ferna once again reminded everyone why he has come to be regarded as one of the game’s pre-eminent holding midfielders.
And, ahead of reuniting with his team-mates when pre-season training resumes next month, the skipper outlined the demands and expectations that are expected of everyone privileged enough to wear the City shirt.
“When the season starts there’s always big expectations from everyone, including ourselves,” the Brazilian added.
“In football, whatever is going on, players come in and players go out, and I think this is normal and it’s part of the process.
“But, for sure, the players which are here now, they know and they understand the level we are at now. The performance level, the results level.
“It’s important that anyone who comes in should know that as soon as they come here and sign for City, you don’t come here for a holiday.

“You come here to work hard and to keep doing the same job we are doing here and to improve the level as well.
“I think this is really important because our targets are really clear.
“We want to play good football, to perform well on the pitch and to win titles.”
