Having joined City from Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last summer’s transfer window, the Italian goalkeeper has gone on to make a huge impact in his first season at City.
He has produced countless key saves at crucial junctures of games to help Guardiola’s side stay firmly in the hunt for the Premier League title with City also seeking to add the FA Cup alongside the Carabao Cup we lifted last month.
Reflecting both on his time at City so far as well as looking ahead to the remainder of the season, Donnarumma highlighted the huge impact working under City boss Guardiola had already had on him.
“I think until you live it, you will never understand,” Donnarumma said of working under Pep.
“Until you experience him, you can’t understand the importance he has and the effect he has on a team.
“Sometimes you are shocked, you are enchanted, sometimes to hear him speak, to prepare a game tactically.
“Every situation, the coach helps me. He helps me manage the moments of the game.
“Every game you have some difficulties that maybe in another game you don’t have.
“And on those situations the coach is very good at preparing for them, at managing them well.
“And I am very happy because he has helped me a lot.
“He has helped me a lot in many situations, on the pitch and off it, and I think both he and the team have been fundamental from the beginning.
“I am very lucky in my career to be coached by him.”
After sealing our place in the FA Cup semi-finals last weekend City resume Premier League action on Sunday with a key trip to tackle Chelsea (16:30 UK).
With leaders Arsenal having slipped to a 2-1 defeat at home to Bournemouth earlier on Saturday, though the Gunners are still nine points clear, with two games in hand and the fact we still have to host Mikel Arteta’s side, victory tomorrow would put a huge spring in City’s title push.
From his perspective, Donnarumma says dealing with pressure is something City will seek to embrace rather than fear.
“You feel it,” the keeper added.
“The destiny is no longer in our hands, but we will try to hang on until the end and put pressure on them but these two games for us [Chelsea and Arsenal] are important.
“It’s always going to be a complicated game [at Chelsea.
“It will be a difficult game because going there to play is never easy.
“We hope to get a great result because it’s very important for us for the title race.”
