Pep Guardiola says the World Cup winter break will give him the chance to recharge his batteries ahead of the big finale to the 2022/23 Barclays Premier League season.

Guardiola, who says he plans to watch the global football tournament at ‘home with a red wine’, is relishing the opportunity to relax for a few days after the Brentford game.

But he stressed that his focus would quickly turn to analysing the first half of the campaign.

The absence of first team matches will give him ‘a bit of distance’ when drawing up plans for the second half of the season.

He said: “The first few days just after the [Brentford] game, I don’t look at anything but afterwards yes I will talk to the staff and, for myself, [it’s a chance] to review the individual and the collective.

“I have more time to analyse. It’s better. You have time to refresh your minds and everything.

“When you have games every three or four days, you don’t have much time to review the previous game. You don’t have time to do much training.

“Sometimes you need time to realise, even ourselves, to realise what do you think happened. And take a bit of distance. It’s good, really good.”

Guardiola lives and breathes football but he admits the enforced break will be positive for staff in the first-team set-up.

He added: “Yeah definitely. Like international breaks.

“For all my staff. Not just myself. For the backroom staff, it’s good to take a break.

“Unfortunately for the players it cannot happen.”
