Ilkay Gundogan has explained the influence that Manchester City's supporters can have on Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League clash with RB Leipzig.

With the first leg ending all-square, Pep Guardiola’s men go into our second leg at the Etihad Stadium knowing victory would book our place in the last eight of Europe’s elite competition.

It would represent a sixth-successive quarter-final spot for City but, against a Leipzig side who have lost just twice in all competitions since September, that ambition is far from a formality.

Home advantage could prove crucial, and Gundogan believes our supporters can make all the difference in what is sure to be a keenly fought contest.

“Our fans are always amazing. Home and away, they are always with us,” the City skipper said.

“They can really play their part on Tuesday night. In a close game, they can be the decisive factor.

“There is no better feeling than playing an important match at the Etihad with our fans and we are all excited to get out there and play with them right behind us.”

Having not faced each other in a competitive fixture before 2021, City and RB Leipzig have now locked horns in successive Champions League campaigns.

The two sides claimed one victory apiece in last season’s group stages, while our Round of 16 first leg finished 1-1 in Germany.

Gundogan and his team-mates are therefore well aware of the threats that our opponents will pose on Tuesday evening.

He said: “They are a top side with so much quality in every department.

“They switch extremely quickly and directly. They have always played strongly against the big teams, so we know we will have to be at our best to get a result.

“It is our responsibility to show our best performance and to get the win to take us through to the next round.”
