Manchester City defender John Stones was delighted with the resilience shown by his side after our 0-0 draw with Atletico Madrid secured our passage to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.

Pep Guardiola’s side had to dig deep to withstand the pressure of the hosts, who had a flurry of chances in the second half during a heated affair in the Spanish capital.

Stones himself was called into action, putting in a vital block to deflect Matheus Cunha’s close-range shot away from goal, helping us secure a last four tie with 13-time European champions Real Madrid.

And the centre-back expressed his pride in the City players for their performance at the Wanda Metropolitano.

He told BT Sport: “Over two legs, I think we played incredible against such an experienced team.

“I’m so proud of the lads today with how we kept our control, our tempers, it is so easy to get drawn into stuff like that.”

The defender, who is in his sixth season at the Etihad Stadium, also took time to commend substitutes such as Nathan Ake and Fernandinho who helped nullify the Atleti threat during the crucial closing stages.

Indeed, Stones believes their role in our progression demonstrated the importance of the collective in this City side.

“It was a difficult night all round, I think how we defended and how we controlled ourselves over the two legs was incredible.

“The lads that came off the bench had an incredible impact; I say it all the time but over the six years I’ve been here that’s why we have been a successful team.

“Everyone plays their role and everyone plays their part in big moments and is always ready when called upon.”
