Joleon Lescott says the latest man of the match display from Phil Foden was further proof positive the City attacking midfielder has the qualities to go on and become an era defining player for both Club and Country.

The 23-year-old, who shone bright in helping City to become FIFA Club World Cup champions in Saudi Arabia last week, transferred his mesmeric talent onto the domestic stage as Pep Guardiola’s side returned to Premier League action at Everton on Wednesday.

Foden capped a superb all-round display against the Toffees by striking a brilliant second half equaliser to set the defending champions on the path to a hugely significant 3-1 victory at Goodison Park.

Despite his tender years, the Academy graduate has already accumulated 16 major trophies in his time at City.

And for former City and England star Lescott, who was one of our special guests on the latest edition of Matchday Live, there is no limit to what Foden can go on to achieve.

“In regard to Phil contributing that shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone because I think he has taken the mantle of Kevin (De Bruyne) being out on his shoulders and just tried to impact every game,” Lescott declared.

“He is already on the path to becoming a club legend and the longevity of his career is going to allow that regardless of what else he goes on to win.

“I think there is a bigger question is does he go onto become England’s best player?

“He can go on to become arguably the most decorated player England has ever produced with the trophies he has now and what he can go on to potentially win

“I think there is a real question of can he go onto become the best ever player England have produced.

“The only thing against him is that he can play well in so many positions we may not recognise the best of him (in one recognised role).

“Every other great has only played one position but in terms of how important Phil is to Man City there is no question.”

Former Everton and England central defender Phil Jagielka, fellow special guest on Wednesday’s Matchday Live, was equally impressed by Foden’s eye-catching performance.

“You can see the attributes Phil has got,” Jagielka pointed out.

“For me the big thing about becoming a legend with not just City but his country is staying there and becoming the number one pick, the first name on the team sheet.

“He’s not quite there with England yet but when he does get that run of games he produces every time.

“He’s definitely got the ability and Phil’s definitely got time on his side and at the moment he’s racking up the trophies so he’s doing OK!”

What City boss Pep Guardiola described as a ‘massive win’ moved the defending champions up into fourth place in the Premier League within striking distance of the top three.

And Lescott says recent history shows that Guardiola’s City are more than capable of putting together a long run of consecutive wins to further turn up the title heat as we approach the second half of what promises to be a compelling fight for domestic supremacy.

“We’ve known at any stage over the last five or six years that City can go in a 10-game winning streak,” Lescott pointed out.

“If that were to happen now, then I don’t think anyone would be surprised.

“City can at any moment put teams to the sword.”
