City’s new signing Josko Gvardiol says he couldn’t be happier to be joining a club that has just enjoyed an incredible campaign.

The coveted 21-year-old has penned a five-year deal with the European champions after arriving from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

He says he is relieved to be a City player and cannot wait to begin an exciting new chapter in his career.

“Finally, I did it - we did it,” smiled the Croatian international.

“It feels good to be part of this team.

“It’s just simple, especially after the perfect season last season, I decided to join City and to become part of this club and learn from the best and of course, to be coached by the best coach in the world.”

Gvardiol has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the last couple of seasons and arrives at the Etihad regarded as one of the best young defenders in the world.

Among his many attributes is an aura of calmness and control beyond his years, and the attitude of a fearless competitor.

“I would say that is just a natural way for me,” he said.

“It is something inside of me which makes me in one way different. And the good thing is that I’m not thinking about anything else when I’m on the pitch.

“I’m just focused on what I’m doing the best. And yeah, that’s just me.”

Gvardiol says the fact his friend and international team-mate Mateo Kovacic has recently joined City is and added bonus.

The young defender says he is a great admirer of the former Chelsea star and that he expects him to be a vital member of Pep Guardiola’s squad.

Despite Kovacic arriving first, Gvardiol says there was no need to ask him about Manchester City because this was an opportunity he wasn’t going to let pass him by.

“Everyone knows about this club, and everyone wants to be part of this club,” he said.

“So, once you have opportunity, I believe that everyone is going to take it, so yeah, it was it was my decision.

“But also, a week ago, I spoke with Kova about the team and everything, and he said that he really likes it and that for sure we’re going to enjoy it here.

“As a person, Mateo is a really, really nice guy and he’s always here to help you.

“On the pitch, he is a fantastic player with amazing control, and I would say maybe one of the fastest players with the ball and of course, the one who is going to give his best.

“No matter how you feel, if you’re winning or losing, he’s the one who’s going to give everything on the pitch.”

Capped 21 times by Croatia, Gvardiol was considered one of the stars of the 2022 World Cup, helping his nation finish third in the tournament.

It is arguably there that he first came to the attention of a global audience, but he believes he has much to learn and cannot wait to start life under Guardiola and his coaching staff.

“I’m the guy who likes the challenges and I like to experience something new in my career,” he said.

“So definitely, I want to be coached by the best manager in the world and of course, to learn something new to improve, improve myself as a player and, of course, as a person.

“His style is one I really like, and this is good that this is the way City play.

“Definitely the possession with the ball is one of the reasons why I’m here and I hope that this style of play is going fit for me.

“I’m here to achieve a lot of things with this team and to win as much as possible.

“I can’t wait to join the team and learn from the best. I have to say that I’m going to be surrounded by the world class players, and it’s a pleasure to be here.

“I’m going to need some time to get used to the training, but it won’t take long.

“The season starts soon, so I have to be ready for it.”
