City’s Liam Delap and Callum Doyle both struck on their England Under-21 debuts as the Three Lions youngsters got their 2025 European Under-21 qualifying campaign up and running with a dominant 3-0 win in Luxembourg.

Delap and Doyle both started alongside Rico Lewis and skipper Taylor Harwood-Bellis with James McAtee a second half substitute.

It was the first appearance for Lee Carsley’s side following their memorable triumph in the 2023 European Under-21 Championships earlier in the summer.

And there was a heavy City flavour to the side with Lewis starting alongside the on-loan trio of Harwood-Bellis (Southampton), Doyle (Leicester) and Delap (Hull) while McAtee (on loan at Sheffield United) was summoned on with 16 minutes left.

Straight from the off in what was the opening game of their Group F 2025 qualifying campaign, the England starlets looked to assert their quality.

Harvey Elliot saw an eighth minute shot blocked on the line before Lewis then whipped in an inviting 33rd minute dipping cross to the far side of the box only for Doyle to head wide.

Former City starlet Cole Palmer then saw a 40th minute goal bound shot deflected behind before England’s pressure finally told two minutes from the break.

Palmer was the architect, threading through an inviting ball into the heart of the box - and arch predator Delap needed no second invitation to mark his debut in style by despatching a clinical close-range finish.

It was another special moment for the striker and one that completed a remarkable sequence at international level with Delap having now scored at Under-16, 17, 18, 19, 10 and 21 level for the Three Lions.

There was more debut delight for another City youngster on 58 minutes when, with Luxembourg seeking to try and summon up a response, Callum Doyle doubled the visitors lead finishing Noni Madueke’s inviting assist.

Palmer then got in on the scoring act too, despatching a superb left footed finish on 67 minutes as England’s superiority took further hold.

England’s Under-21s resume their qualifying campaign in October with clashes against Serbia and Ukraine.
