Looking back at events - good or bad - that happened on this day in our history...

April 21

2001: City hold Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford but the game’s major talking point is a controversial tackle on Alfie Inge Haaland by Roy Keane which sees the United skipper subsequently sent off.

Teddy Sheringham gives United the lead but Steve Howey levels seven minutes from time to give Joe Royle’s side renewed hope in our battle to beat the drop.

2002: In a season which City dominate the second tier of English football, Kevin Keegan’s men go into the final game of the season having already secured promotion as champions of the division.

CITYZENS AT HOME

Harry Redknapp’s Portsmouth are the opposition, but fail to resist the attacking flair of a City side boasting the creative talents of Ali Benarbia and Eyal Berkovic and the Blues secure all three points in a 3-1 win.

Even in an unusually clinical and efficient City season, the Blues were unable to sign off without a ‘typical’ moment.

As the game entered its final moments the Blues win a penalty and Stuart Pearce, in the final game of his career, steps up for what will be his 100th career goal whilst it would also secure the club a record goal tally for the division with 109 – but he missed!

2003: Marc Vivien Foe scores what turns out to be the last ever City goal at Maine Road during a 3-0 victory over Sunderland.

It’s Foe’s second goal that will be etched into the history books – Robbie Fowler sandwiched one in between his brace – with City failing to score again in their final two home matches.

2013: Tottenham produced a second-half fightback against City to secure a 3-1 win and all but extinguish our hopes of retaining the Premier League title.

City led through Samir Nasri’s early strike before Spurs hit back with three goals in seven second-half minutes.

Clint Dempsey’s tap-in levelled before Jermain Defoe fired past Joe Hart.

Gareth Bale then dinked a third as Spurs moved to within a point of fourth-placed Chelsea.

2014: City moved within six points of Premier League leaders Liverpool with a routine 3-1 victory over West Brom at the Etihad.

Pablo Zabaleta headed Manuel Pellegrini’s side in front after two minutes before Sergio Aguero drove in from 20 yards.

Graham Dorrans pulled one back for the Baggies with a fine effort from the edge of the area before Martin Demichelis stabbed in from a corner to take City’s goal tally to 145 for the season.
