Pep Guardiola has praised the ever-dependable Nathan Ake ahead of our home game with Crystal Palace.

Now in his sixth season with City, the 31-year-old defender has clocked up 175 appearances to date and won 11 trophies during the time.

The popular Dutch international returned to the first team for the 2-1 win over Southampton at Wembley and was again excellent in the weekend win over Brentford.

His manager says his focus and ability to slot in and perform whenever requested makes him an invaluable squad member.

Nathan the job he has to do in terms of focus, is one of the best and there are few players who are more reliable,” said Pep.

“If he has to play every few days, he struggles, but the final of the Carabao Cup, the last game against Brentford, he is complete. Wow.  He is one of the best I ever had.

“Apart from that he is one of the most incredible team mates for his manager and his team-mates and has been an incredible signing from Bournemouth.

“He played in the Champions League final in Istanbul, that is how reliable he is. Top guy and a top player.”

And asked what he thought about Ake entering the final year of his contract next season, the boss replied: “One more year, right? I wish he stays with us, but I don’t know what is going to happen.”

The Blues will look to move within two points of leaders Arsenal against Crystal Palace on Wednesday evening.

Pep was asked what he thought of TV pundits writing off City’s title chances after the Gunners’ win over West Ham left them within two wins of a first Premier League crown in 20 years.

He replied: “[In the Premier League] we play tomorrow night, then we go to Bournemouth, then we play Aston Villa here.

“The Importance is tomorrow. And we see what happens, and then the next one. When you lose the focus you are in a dangerous situation.  I always think we can do it better, control.

“Never trust anything since I arrive a long time ago. Always I learn, do it better. Blame yourself. Do better for yourself, that is the focus.

“Always I said when I arrive here. Do it, do it, do it better and our focus is now Crystal Palace.”
