A look at the incredible statistics behind Manchester City’s 100 matches in the Champions League.

Pep Guardiola’s men reached the milestone after securing our place in this season’s semi-finals with a goalless draw at Atletico Madrid.

A two-legged tie with 13-time champions Real Madrid awaits in the last four; our third semi-final appearance having reached the knockout stages in each of the last nine campaigns.

To celebrate City’s Champions League century, check out some of the hugely impressive numbers we’ve picked up along the way.

Total wins

Pep Guardiola’s men have won 55 of our first 100 matches in the Champions League, drawing 18 and losing 27.

It’s the best winning record of any English side to reach a century of appearances in Europe’s elite competition, while only Real Madrid (57) have claimed more victories in the same timeframe.

Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona are hot on our heels with 54 wins, while Manchester United managed to claim 53 in their first 100 Champions League matches.

Total goals

City also lead the way among English sides when finding the net in the Champions League.

Pep Guardiola’s men have grabbed 201 goals in our 100 matches, one shy of Real Madrid’s overall record at an average of two goals per game.

Once again, it’s Paris Saint-Germain (197), Barcelona (191) and Manchester United (185) who complete the top five.

On the ball

Dominance in possession has become a key part of City’s identity in recent years, and our Champions League statistics demonstrate that perfectly.

Pep Guardiola’s men have averaged a hugely impressive 57.5% of the ball across our 100 matches to date.

For the 2021/22 campaign alone, that figure shoots up to a remarkable 61.3% - emphasising that, even against the best that Europe has to offer, City continue to dictate the play.

Individual records

It comes as no surprise to learn Club captain and current longest-serving City player Fernandinho sits top of our appearance charts in the Champions League.

The Brazilian has featured 71 times in Europe’s elite competition for City since a 3-0 win at Viktoria Plzen back in September 2013, 16 more than second-placed Raheem Sterling.

Sergio Aguero, who is also City’s leading Champions League goalscorer with 34 strikes, sits third on the list with 64 appearances while David Silva (55) and Ilkay Gundogan (52) complete the top five.

50:50

City’s record after 50 Champions League matches stood at a commendable 21 wins, 12 draws and 17 losses but as we have continued to gain experience in the competition, our overall record has reached a new level.

Indeed, in the 50 matches leading up to our century, Pep Guardiola’s men have clocked up a stunning 34 victories.

During that time, we have found the net on 114 occasions and conceded just 48 in the process, claiming 19 clean sheets.

In our first 50 matches, that record stood at 87 goals scored, 70 conceded and 10 clean sheets.
