Nicky Weaver admits he and his dad were starstruck on his signing day with Manchester City – because the ‘Holy Trinity’ turned up to welcome him.

Weaver joined City in 1997 from Mansfield Town on the recommendation of goalkeeping coach Alex Stepney and went on to become a cult hero over a 10-year spell in sky blue.

What’s more, the shot-stopping star put pen to paper on his contract at Maine Road under the watchful eye of a host of celebrated City personalities - much to the delight of his father.

“I remember when I actually signed, City had been watching me for a little bit and put in a bid that got accepted by Mansfield and I came over,” he told a ‘Maine Road 100’ roundtable interview, which will be released later this week.

“It was at Platt Lane where we met Frank Clark, the manager, we met Francis Lee, obviously the chairman at the time, and we ended up - it was me, mum and dad.

“We ended up having lunch with Frank Clark, Francis Lee, Mike Summerbee and Colin Bell. My dad was like: ‘It’s Francis Lee. It’s Mike Summerbee. It’s Colin Bell’.

“It was internationals, superstars and they were right in my dad’s era so he was in his element.

“And then I remember getting in a massive Mercedes that Francis Lee had and we drove over to Maine Road and I signed over there that afternoon and it was one of the best days in my life and my family’s life as well and something I’ll remember forever.

“Then Maine Road became my home for the next few years before the move to the Etihad.”
