Pep Guardiola says that Jack Grealish is unlikely to be fit in time for City’s return to Premier League action at home to Tottenham on Saturday.

The midfielder was side-lined with a shin problem for both our 4-0 Premier League win at Norwich last weekend and Tuesday’s 5-0 Champions League last 16 first leg triumph at Sporting.

Gabriel Jesus and Cole Palmer have also been unavailable in the past few weeks through injury too.

Asked for a fitness update on the squad, the City boss said that he would have a better picture of all of his players’ availability after Friday afternoon’s training session.

But he also revealed that he felt Saturday’s teatime assignment against Antonio Conte’s side would come too soon for Grealish.

“We are going to train now in two hours and we will speak with the doctors,” Guardiola confirmed.

In terms of Grealish specifically, who suffered a lengthy period on the sidelines with a shin problem at Aston Villa last term, Pep added: “I am not a doctor, I am sorry.

“The shin, the symptoms seem much less than last season in Birmingham.

“I didn’t talk with the doctor but we will see. I don’t think he will be ready for tomorrow but hopefully for the next weeks.”

Looking ahead to the clash with Tottenham, the boss warned that Spurs would prove dangerous opponents – all the more after suffering consecutive league defeats against Wolves, Southampton and Chelsea.

And he said that given Conte had taken over with the season already underway, it would take time for his ideas and philosophy to be fully implemented.

“This is a problem - the fact they lost three times makes it more difficult tomorrow,” Guardiola warned.

“It’s difficult for top teams to lose four times in a row. They have a lot of weapons, we suffer with Son, Harry Kane, Moura, they have a lot of quality.

“The process and patterns start realising what they have to do.

“A manager who arrives in the season, it is not easy to make changes. With games every three days it’s not easy. In football we don’t have time.

“This Club gave me time and that’s why I will always be grateful.

“But managers need time to get ideas across and get players to follow what they feel.”
