We play host to Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday 22 December in the Carabao Cup, with kick off scheduled for 20:00 (UK).

Girona friendly good for players, says Guardiola

PEP GUARDIOLA PREVIEW

Pep Guardiola says City’s World Cup representatives have returned in good shape, with six players returning to the fold ahead of the meeting with Liverpool. 

The Boss added: “They played a unique experience. If they come back as good as possible they will try to live another experience in four years’ time in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

“The players at the World Cup are in better condition than the ones that were here.

“Sergio Gomez /ErlingHaaland /Riyad Mahrez/Cole Palmer they are missing a little bit.

“They competed every day and we had holidays. That’s why it was so important to maintain the rhythm. We had one month off.”

PREVIOUS MEETING

Our last League Cup match against the Reds goes back to the 2015/16 final at Wembley Stadium, where City won an enticing penalty shootout.

Neither team could carve out a winning goal, after goals from Fernandinho and Philippe Coutinho meant the teams were even after 120 minutes.

In the thrilling penalty shootout that followed, Willy Caballero saved Adam Lallana’s penalty, before Yaya Toure stepped up and calmly converted the winner to make it 3-1 and secure the Capital One Cup.

Our last Premier League encounter with Liverpool ended up in a 1-0 defeat at Anfield in October, after Mo Salah’s goal separated the teams at the final whistle.

Lewis: Girona clash ideal preparation for near future

LAST TIME OUT

Our last competitive outing was a 2-1 Premier League defeat to Brentford back on the 12 November after Ivan Toney’s 98th minute goal broke City hearts.

The English striker had put Brentford in front at the Etihad, before Phil Foden struck in an equaliser seconds after the half time interval.

With City pushing forward to find that breakthrough for the winning goal, the Bees counter attacked late on, and found the winning goal through Ivan Toney who tapped in his second of the afternoon.

With the World Cup in Qatar pausing City’s football schedule, Pep Guardiola‘s men took part in a friendly match against Girona, and goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland secured a 2-0 victory at the Academy Stadium.

This sees City sit second in the Premier League table, through to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League and in both domestic cups. 

Liverpool come into the clash with 11 wins, five draws and five losses in all competitions in 2022/23.
