Phil Foden believes City can use a dominant Premier League home record against Liverpool to full advantage on Sunday afternoon.

Liverpool have won just one of 12 league visits to the Etihad since October 2008, with City winning the other seven and four ending in draws.

The England forward says those statistics – plus a vociferous Etihad crowd – can give the defending champions a crucial edge in this latest encounter against Jurgen Klopp’s men.

“We’ve only lost once at home in 12 years in the Premier League and that is such a great record to have and we can take confidence from that,” said Foden.

“Being a City fan definitely helps. You know what the supporters want. Hopefully I can make them proud on Sunday.

“All they keep saying is ‘you better win, you better win!’. Hopefully we can get the job done.

“They just want intensity, good attacking football, everyone working hard and we will definitely need them as well on Sunday.

“From past experiences (in this fixture), our fans have been the loudest fans.

“We definitely need that again on Sunday. It just gives you a lot of confidence, hearing the crowd behind you.

“Especially when someone wins a challenge you just hear them and it makes you feel confident.

“On Sunday, I am sure they will be really loud and help us. We have a great record at home and hopefully on Sunday we can keep that up.

“I am really excited about the game. It is such a big occasion and a massive game as well. I just cannot wait to play.”

Foden has become a thorn in Liverpool’s side over the past few years, with three goals against the Merseysiders in three games.

But he says it is not always the opposition that matters, more the magnitude of the game he is involved with that makes him excel.

“Yeah, I’ve scored three in three, but I don’t think it so much to do with Liverpool, I just think it is a big game and I just like playing in big games,” he said.

“I like the pressure and I feel like I play better. It is just another game for me and I just want to express myself.

“The rivalry is massive. Over the past four years it has grown and now it has become a really big thing. We have both been fighting for titles over the past few seasons.

“We have been the two strongest teams in the past few years and it is a rivalry where we know we are both great teams and we can both win on our day.

“I would say they are the hardest team to play against.

“The way they press you and give you no time on the ball. You have got to think so quickly on the ball and there is always a man on your back.

“I think it is just the way they play really. In terms of the toughest opponents, every game we play is tough. Teams sit with five at the back and play deep against us.

“We have to beat the biggest teams to win things. We know Liverpool are a great team and it is such a challenge.

“Liverpool like to play as well. Some teams just sit there defensively where they like to hit you on the counter.

“It is something we have to prepare for and we know our strengths that can hurt them as well.

“It is going to be a great game, but I don’t think this match will decide the title.

“Just the way the Premier League is, every game is so tough. Hopefully we can break them down and win.

“There are so many trophies still to fight for this year. If we win them all then it is definitely one we can look back on in years to come as it is a very special time against so many tough opponents.

“Liverpool aren’t in bad form, either. All we can do is just try our best against them.”
