A Manchester derby is always one of the sternest tests in Manchester City’s calendar, but ahead of the latest instalment of the famous fixture, players and fans alike should be encouraged by recent history.

As the most successful team in the country over the last decade, City have had plenty to celebrate and the same applies to our derby record across the same period.

Put simply, we have been superior in the 21 meetings since the start of the 2011-12 season.

Unsurprisingly, given the competitive nature of the games, it is a marginal superiority, but City still come out on top across several metrics.

We have won 11 of those contests, drawing three to leave us with a win percentage of 52% and have outscored and out passed United, who have seven victories to their name.

Possession has been the cornerstone of City’s success in recent years and it’s the same in the derby.

Since 2011-12. we have enjoyed 58% of possession against United and it should come as no surprise to see that figure rise to 65% in the 11 derbies Pep Guardiola has overseen since taking charge in the summer of 2016.

More possession means more passes and it is here where we have really exerted our dominance over the Reds.

In the past 10 seasons, City have made 10,028 successful passes, compared to United’s 6697.

And, when you look at Guardiola’s five and half season tenure in isolation, our completed passes figure (6482) is just shy of the number managed by our cross-town rivals managed since 2011-12.

City have made our possession count, too, scoring 35 goals to United’s 23 in this 10-year time frame.

As in any game, derby success is a result of the collective effort, but on the goalscoring front several individuals have come to the fore in a blue shirt.

Sergio Aguero’s eight goals are more than anyone else has managed in the fixture since the beginning of our first Premier League title-winning season, whilst Edin Dzeko (4) also hit the back of the net more than any United player.

Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Wayne Rooney (all 3), are the Reds top scorers in this period, a tally David Silva and Yaya Toure both reached during their legendary City careers.

Of course, there is much more to a derby contest than statistics and, in our immediate history results have been fairly even, with both sides winning two of the last five fixtures.

However, if you’re looking for positive omens ahead of Sunday’s fixture, then the statistics of the last decade certainly provide that.
