Matheus Nunes is the latest signing to join Manchester City following his move from Wolves.

The 25-year-old join on a five-year deal, becoming Pep Guardiola’s fourth signing of the transfer window.

Here are 10 things you may or may not know about our new midfielder…

EARLY LIFE

Matheus was born in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil but moved to Portugal when he was 12.

His stepdad is from Sunderland and helped him learn English as a youngster and develop his love for the Premier League.

“It would be in the mornings, because in Brazil, we were about four hours behind here in England, so in the weekend, every morning we would spend watching Sunderland on the TV,” he said.

“But it wasn’t only Sunderland, it would be all of the Premier League and the rest of the teams as well, so since I was a little kid, I have been watching Sunderland and the rest of the Premier League.”

LATE BLOOMER

The midfielder was still playing local football in the Lisbon Football Association until he was 19, before signing with Estoril in the summer of 2018.

Before turning professional, he served coffee and pastel de nata at his godfather’s bakery in Pao da Vila and playing part-time.

WAITING GAME

Nunes had unsuccessful trials with Benfica, Braga, Lille and Leicester City as a youngster.

But they all opted against signing him and he joined fifth-tier Ericeirense - a semi-professional club from the Portuguese seaside town of Ericeira.

QUICK RISE

He played just eight times for Estoril before being snapped up by Portuguese giants Sporting.

A regular for the Under-23 side in his first full season, he was handed his senior debut against Vitoria on 4 June 2020 and quickly became a mainstay of the senior team and helped them to a league and cup double.

It was the club’s first title in 19 years and Nunes scored a late winner against Lisbon rivals Benfica on the way to the league success.

TALENT SPOTTER

Nunes was named in the Portuguese League Team of the Year the following season as his star continued to rise.

He also made his Champions League debut and while Sporting were beaten 5-0 at home by City in the last-16, his quality was spotted by Pep Guardiola.

“Matheus Nunes is one of the best players in the world today,” the boss said.

ALL-ROUNDER

A phenomenal season with Sporting was underlined by his statistics which marked him as one of the most influential players in different areas.

He was first in the league for most successful dribbles, fourth for duels won, the ninth most fouled player and 10th for completed passes in the final third.

INTERNATIONAL STAR

A call from Brazil, the country of his birth, came on his 23rd birthday in August 2021, but he instead opted to play for Portugal.

He won the first of 11 caps the following October, starting a 3-0 friendly win over Qatar, and made two appearances at the 2022 World Cup.

WOLVES POUNCE

After starting the 2022/23 season with a goal and assist for Sporting, he moved to Wolves last August.

He made 36 appearances last season and scored his only goal – a spectacular volley in a 1-0 victory over Chelsea – which was voted the Premier League Goal of the Month for April.

INSTANT IMPACT

His versality continued following his move to the Premier League as he continued to show his quality all over the pitch.

As well as being sixth among all Premier League midfielders for successful dribbles, Nunes showed his defensive attributes as the 10th most successful central midfielder for ground duels won.

PORTUGUESE MEN OF WAR

Nunes will become the fifth player to play for City after former attacker Rony Lopes and Bernardo Silva, Joao Cancelo and Ruben Dias.
