Nedum Onuoha believes that the inspired form of Riyad Mahrez is demonstrating that the City winger is ‘every defender’s nightmare’

The Algerian has made a huge contribution to our record-breaking run of 21 consecutive victories, and produced another man of the match display in the course of Tuesday’s 4-1 win over Wolves, both scoring and providing an assist.

For his part, former City central defender Onuoha says that Mahrez has established himself as one of the key components of the supremely talented squad assembled by manager Pep Guardiola which has equalled our Club record in going 28 games unbeaten.

And, speaking on Tuesday’s latest edition of our ‘We’re Not Really Here’ matchday show, Nedum described Mahrez as a ‘joy to watch’.

“I love him. I think he’s one of many players in the team who don’t necessarily get the headlines but do a great job for the team,” declared Onuoha.

“For him when you add that he’s scored seven and got five assists, he’s contributing.

“As a coach you can have your ideas but can you get your players to buy into it all the time?

“And Pep has that in someone like Mahrez.

“He works exceptionally hard defensively and he understands his role and occupies the defence in a certain way.

“And if he gives away the ball he reacts straight away and there’s always a moment where he’ll get someone isolated inside the box and that’s bad news (for the opposition).

“I remember his first season at Leicester and he had one of my teammates digging a hole in the ground trying to find him!

“You can see he’s very comfortable in the shirt. He understands his role, he’s looking to affect games in a positive manner, and as you can see every time, he gets himself into the box, the fact he can go either way, it’s a defender’s nightmare.

“As far as City fans go, if you see him in there, chances are something good will happen.

“It’s a blessing to have people like him on the field who can do something a bit different.

“He’s getting some isolations there one on one, and I’m just there in the background making all types of noises by the stuff I’m seeing.

“It’s unique, it’s special, it’s part of the system but it’s a joy to watch and long may it continue.”
