Neil Lennon described a dominantCity as being a ‘joy to watch’ in the wake of Wednesday’s hugely impressive 3-1 Etihad win over Burnley.

There were positives aplenty for City on a night which saw the defending champions regain second spot in the Premier League table.

As well as another two goals for the impressive Julian Alvarez, taking his tally for the season to 15, there was also a first start since the opening day of the season for skipper Kevin De Bruyne along with the long-awaited return off the bench for a fit-again Erling Haaland.

Reflecting on both the victory and performance, former Celtic and Hibernian manager Lennon - who began his storied midfield playing career at City - also referenced the way several other members of the side had played their part too.

“I thought City were outstanding for long, long periods of the game and in the first half they were a joy to watch,” declared Lennon, who was one of our special guests on Wednesday’s latest edition of Matchday Live.

“And I really enjoyed some of the boys who came into the team. I thought Matheus Nunes was spectacular for long periods of the game, and I couldn’t take my eyes off Jeremy Doku.

“I just thought he was brilliant.

“It was a great team performance and when the third goal went in the game was over as a contest.

“But City were a joy to watch.

“You saw Kevin De Bruyne getting more minutes, Rodrigo getting a goal, Phil Foden… you could go through the whole team and say ‘yeah, they played really well both individually and as a collective.’

“You also saw Pep running over to Carlos Vicens the set play coach and giving him a big hug [after Alvarez’s brilliant second goal].

“There is so much work and analysis that goes int this but the weight of the pass from De Bruyne and the contact between him and Alvarez.

“It’s just two really intelligent players linking together for a brilliant creative goal.”

Also, in the starting line up at the Etihad last night was Rico Lewis, who once again rewarded the manager’s faith with a performance full of intelligence and industry.

And for Lennon, the way Lewis is maturing and developing bears testament to the priceless experience he is afforded playing and training alongside such world class talent.

Rico Lewis just slots in there and you can play him in any number of positions as he is so versatile,” Lennon pointed out.

“Whatever he is asked to do, he does and he does it well.

“For a young player to have this sort of development in his career and to play with these players, you can just see hm grow with every game.”

The Burnley triumph made it eight victories in a row for a City side who look full of momentum and belief as the key final third of the campaign hovers into view.

But rather than being distracted by looking too far down the track at what could lie in store, Lennon says the single-minded focus on performance and the immediate task in hand that has characterised the side under Pep will again stand us in good stead.

“You’ve got to tick the games off but also look at the level of performance,” Lennon added.

“And I thought that was very good again on Wednesday night.

“They are going to come up against stiffer opposition and that’s when City really come to the fore.

“It’s another three points, and Pep will be delighted with what he’s seen from a few players on the fringe.

“All in all, it was a really good night’s work.”
