Looking back at events - good or bad - that happened on this day in our history...

22 April

1978

A great day for City and for Kenny Clements in particular, who clocks up his 100th appearance during a 4-1 victory at St Andrew’s.

Brian Kidd (2), Paul Power and Gary Owen are all on target as the visitors complete the league double over the Midlands side to move fifth in the table.

A dreadful March had seen Tony Book’s side fail to win any of our five matches, drawing four and losing once, slipping City from second and right on the tail of leaders Nottingham Forest to fifth and despite this victory, some 11 points behind Brian Clough’s men who would eventually finish as Champions.

2000

Shaun Goater and Jeff Whitley are on the scoresheet, as City register a 2-0 win over Tranmere Rovers at Maine Road, continuing our push for promotion to the Premier League.

The triumph marks our fifth win in six games, as Joe Royle’s side hit form at the crucial time in the Division One run-in.

2012

City claim a crucial victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers to keep our hopes of a first Premier League title alive.

Roberto Mancini’s men had looked to have lost the battle to neighbours Manchester United but a dip in form for the Reds saw Sir Alex Ferguson’s side fall to defeat at Wigan and drop points in dramatic fashion against Everton to re-open the gate for City.

Following the eight-goal thriller at Old Trafford earlier in the day, City travel to Molineux, needing a victory to relight our chances of title success.

Needing no second invitation, goals in each half from Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri secure a vital three points, meaning victory against United in the next game would swing the race back in City’s favour…

2017

Having reached the semi-finals at the first attempt, City host European Champions Lyon in the Champions League first-leg at the Academy Stadium.

Nick Cushing’s side suffer the worst possible start, conceding an away goal with barely a minute gone, as Saki Kumagai despatches from the penalty spot, following Carli Lloyd’s handball.

Kosovare Asllani equalises for the hosts but the French outfit rally and score twice more through Dzsenifer Marozsán and Eugenie Le Sommer to hand themselves a strong advantage to take back home.

2018

In a repeat of the previous year’s encounter, City and Lyon meet once again in the European last four first leg with the home side producing a much-improved showing than the previous year, preserving a precious clean sheet to deny Lyon an away goal.

2018

With the Premier League title already wrapped up, Champions City storm to a 5-0 triumph over Swansea at the Etihad Stadium.

Chasing an unprecedented 100 points (and several other league records), Pep Guardiola’s men race into a 2-0 lead after just 16 minutes, courtesy of goals from David Silva and Raheem Sterling, adding three in the second half through Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus to cap a superb win.

Birthdays

John Bray is born on 22 April 1909 in Oswaldtwistle.

The former left-half joined City in 1929 and stayed until 1938, winning the FA Cup in 1934 and the 1936/37 First Division title.

In total, he made 257 appearances for the Club, scoring ten goals, before ‘guesting’ for several teams during World War II.

Meanwhile, Spencer Prior celebrates his 49th birthday today.

The former City defender, who signed for the Club in 2000 to aid the Club’s Division One promotion push, was born in Southend on 22 April 1971.

Upon arrival at Maine Road, Prior made an instant impact to our bid for promotion with his leadership, solidity and even a few goals. He would tally 30 appearances in sky blue.
