Crerand had told him City would never gain an attendance over 30,000, although we would in fact go on to double that when we play Everton in a game, which is watched by 63,034…

Tuesday 27 October 1987

A chilly October evening sees City host Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest at Maine Road with a place in the League Cup last 16 up for grabs.

Mel Machin’s side were a force to be reckoned with now we had started to click.

Forest skipper Stuart Pearce would not have been pleased with his side’s display as Imre Varadi scores twice and Paul Stewart adds a third to dump team out emphatically by a score of 3-0.

Saturday 27 October 1990

City and United contest a six-goal thriller at Maine Road.

David White nets twice in five minutes to send the home side into a two-goal lead - and the Blue half of Manchester into raptures.

The striker opens the scoring on the 20-minute mark, sweeping into the bottom corner, before stabbing home a quickfire second on the half-volley.

Mark Hughes halves the deficit with a header but Colin Hendry restores the hosts’ cushion with a cool finish with just 11 minutes remaining.

City look to be in control but United fight back late on with two goals in three minutes from Brian McClair.

Steve Bull’s solitary strike separates the sides, as Wolves triumph at Maine Road.

Wednesday 27 October 1999

Kevin Horlock nets the only goal of the game at Maine Road to defeat Ipswich Town - but the night belongs to Nicky Weaver, who produces an astonishing display to preserve a crucial clean sheet.

Weaver thwarts wave after wave of attack, somehow keeping the ball out of the City net with a string of stunning saves.

His heroics clinch a pivotal win against our Division One title challengers and the exuberant ‘keeper celebrates with his joyful fans by cartwheeling on the pitch at full-time!

The following May, City go on to edge Ipswich to an automatic promotion spot on the final day of the season.

Sergio Aguero had cancelled out Andre Schurrle’s opener four minutes into the second half but the visitors are unable to hold on for a point at Stamford Bridge.

Michael Tarnat was born on this day in 1969.

The German defender joined City in 2003 and played 41 times for the Club.

He scored four goals in sky blue – most notably a sensational 40-yard rocket of a free-kick away at Blackburn Rovers.
