1946

George Smith scores all four goals as City beat Manchester United 4-1 in the final wartime Old Trafford derby.

Watched by more than 62,000 people, Smith’s quadruple takes his season tally to 17 but the return derby at Maine Road a week later sees United reclaim the bragging rights with a 3-1 win.

1990

City legend Peter Doherty dies aged 76.

Signed for a club record fee of £10,000, the elegant inside forward was the star man as the Club was crowned champions of England for the first time in 1936-37.

The Northern Irishman scored 32 times in 45 games that season and continued to find the net regularly in the following two campaigns as he became one of the legends of the game.

However, Doherty was unable to build on his City career due to the outbreak of World War Two, during which he served in the RAF as a PT instructor-sergeant.

When peacetime returned, his playing career resumed with Derby County, Huddersfield Town and Doncaster Rovers, before he began life as a manager, earning a reputation as one of the most revolutionary coaches of his time.

2002

Kevin Keegan’s City beat Barnsley 5-1 to clinch the Division One title in emphatic fashion.

Darren Huckerby hit a hat-trick with midseason recruit Jon Macken netting a brace, including the 100th league goal for the free scoring champions.

Despite the goalscoring exploits of the front two, Ali Bernabia proves the influential architect of the comprehensive victory, as he was involved in four goals on a day to remember at Maine Road.

2019

City beat Brighton and Hove Albion 1-0 at Wembley Stadium to reach an 11th FA Cup final.

Gabriel Jesus’ heads home after four minutes to progress to the third cup final of Pep Guardiola’s tenure and keep City on course for an unprecedented capture of all four English trophies.
