Paul Dickov says Manchester City proved there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic for the season ahead with a dominant display against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

Our former striker turned Matchday Live pundit felt Pep Guardiola’s men were the far better side despite falling to a 2-0 defeat at the Parc Des Princes.

City were in control for long periods against the French outfit, but lacked our trademark cutting edge in the final third and it proved costly as Idrissa Gueye and Lionel Messi struck for the hosts.

Despite the disappointment, Dickov believes Guardiola and his players should be encouraged by the performance, which he says highlighted how superior City are to a side widely regarded as one of the best in Europe.

“Anyone who knows anything about football can see how far ahead we are of PSG, because we were tonight, in every department,” he said on the latest edition of Matchday Live.

“To go to Paris after a tough game against Chelsea and put in that performance and dominate PSG the way we did, it just looks so good for the future.

“PSG are one of the favourites for the Champions League and we dominated them.

“Stats don’t mean a lot, but you look at the possession, the shots we’ve had, but then when you have got Lionel Messi in your team… I can’t remember him doing anything at all tonight, until the goal.

“It was a fantastic finish, we’re 2-0 down and then it’s game over, but I think Pep will look at the performance and be really pleased with that.

“We’re all disappointed we’ve been beat, but performance wise there were big performances from big players.”

Dickov’s thoughts echoed those of Guardiola, who was happy with his team’s display, but admitted there was room for improvement in front of goal.

The manager sent on Phil Foden for the final 22-minutes in a bid to get back into the game and, whilst the Academy graduate was unable to inspire a comeback, he showed signs he is returning to his best form after an injury lay-off.

Dickov was particularly impressed with the midfielder and, despite his tender years, believes he is already amongst the most talented players in the game.

“People keep saying he’s the next best thing,” he added.

“He’s here and now. He is up there with the best in the world. He came on and had an impact straight away.

“Phil is coming back really hungry because he’s missed the start of the season. He looked really sharp again and, [in] the first couple of minutes after he came on, he had a huge impact.

“The more we see of Phil Foden the better, I think.”
