Pep Guardiola says the return to fitness of Phil Foden is the perfect boost ahead of Wednesday’s huge Champions League quarter-final second leg tie at Bayern Munich and confirmed the England international will be on the bench at the Allianz Arena.

The City attacking midfielder has been sidelined since midway through the March international break after undergoing surgery for appendicitis.

But after three weeks out recovering, the 22-year-old made a welcome return to training earlier this week and flew out to Germany with the rest of the City squad on Tuesday afternoon.

And speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the match, the City boss confirmed Foden would start on the bench.

Pep also says Foden‘s return to fitness is the ideal tonic as City vie for silverware on three fronts in the defining stretch of the season.

“We’re delighted (he is back)” Guardiola revealed.

“Definitely it’s good news for us. He has trained just once yesterday but we decided he would travel with us and be on the bench.

“(How minutes he is capable of) I don’t know. 90 for sure no. But his physicality is special.

“He is a special player who doesn’t need a lot of training sessions to be fit.

“But he’s important - not just for tomorrow, but for the tight schedule we have ahead of us.”

City will kick-off in Bavaria holding a vital 3-0 advantage from last week’s superb first leg showing at the Etihad as we try to seal a semi-final spot against either Chelsea or Real Madrid.

However, the City boss – who was in charge at Bayern for three years between 2013 and 2016 – knows all about the quality of the German champions.

And Guardiola insisted his own experience of his time in charge at Bayern made him acutely aware of the threat City will face on Wednesday evening.

“I’ve been here at Bayern Munich and I know the mentality of this club,” Pep added.

“It’s everywhere, it’s in the skin. I know they believe they can do it.

“We believe too but when you’re in these type of clubs and we’ll try to build this feeling that whatever happens, we can do it like the history they have in the competition, we’re growing that.

“It is what it is.

“This is an opportunity to prove ourselves versus one of the best in Europe and we’ll try to impose our game.

“The mindset is to try and win the game. The approach is the same, come here knowing the quality they have.

“We just talk about the game we have to play, not the result one week ago or the consequences or future, it’s what you have to do in the game.

“Focus on every single action what you have to do to get the best result and try to reach the semi-final.”
