Pep Guardiola described Phil Foden as a player who 'lived for football’ after the City midfielder’s crucial strike secured a vital 1-0 win over Brighton.

Foden struck a brilliant goal just before half-time to seal a fourth successive league win for City and ensured we took three points against an impressive Brighton side.

The 44th minute right foot strike rounded off a man of the match display from Foden.

And reflecting on the win, Guardiola highlighted the youngster’s hunger and appetite for the game.

“I said many times what I think about Phil - the number of games goals, assists and kilometers he runs for the team,” Guardiola asserted.

“He’s a guy close to the goals he has a special instinct - his standards are higher and he deserves to play.

“I try to judge the team day by day; recent performances and he lives 24 hours for football. I have the feeling he lives 24 hours a day to play football!

“He’s happiest when he plays games or when his training. Everyone can see the standard of his performance.”

Guardiola was also pressed on whether he thought given his fine displays, the 20-year-old was a strong shout to be selected by the watching Gareth Southgate for England’s Euro 2021 squad this summer.

“I don’t know - that’s a question for Gareth (Southgate). I’m pretty sure he knows Phil well and how he is playing in the games and training,” the City boss added.

“At Chelsea against Azpilicueta  - one of the most outstanding defenders of the last 10 years in the Premier League he was outstanding and against Aaron Wan Bisaka of United he played pretty well when everyone struggles against him in the last few years.

“I don’t know but I’m pretty sure he will be selected for Euros and I’m pretty sure he was impressed tonight like the rest of us.”

Guardiola also hailed the fighting qualities of his side with City forced to focus and concentrate for the full 90 minutes against the Seagulls.

And he said Graham Potter’s visitors had provided the perfect test for his players.

“I said to the players we are going to play the toughest opponent we are going to face in the next weeks for the way they play,” he added.

“Not because the other teams are not good, just for the way they play, because no matter if you are a top side or if you have the quality of players we have, when you are up against the personality and courage that Graham Potter’s teams have, it always will be difficult.

“We knew it, so we did a really good last 15 minutes of the first half when we played a lot of passes and we created five or six clear chances to score in the last 15-20 minutes, not because we played bad but because they are really, really good.

“We struggled, especially at 1-0. It was the best thing that could happen to us today, struggling in the last 10 or 15 minutes of the game.

“Pleased for the effort because we have won four games in a row - now for Palace.”
