Pep Guardiola says City must be ‘almost perfect’ between now and the end of the season to rival Arsenal for the Premier League title.

Arsenal dropped two points last night as they drew 0-0 with Newcastle United at the Emirates Stadium.

But Guardiola believes they’re still on course for a big total when the campaign concludes in May.

He stresses that the way to compete with the Gunners is to ‘play good and win games’.

He said: “The way you have to reduce the gap is play good and win games.

“They have an average they’re going to do 100 points, Arsenal, the way they’ve done so far.

“If they continue that way, we will not catch them. So you have to be almost perfect, I would say.

“Yesterday they were excellent against Newcastle again. We will see what happens.”

City head to Stamford Bridge tomorrow for the first of our six games in the month of January – and it’s the first of two successive games against the Blues.

This is a Premier League encounter, kick-off 20:00 (UK) and then we take on Graham Potter’s team at home in the FA Cup on Sunday 8 January, kick-off 16:30 (UK).

What follows is a trip to Southampton in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup, with that match taking place on Wednesday 11 January, kick-off 20:00 (UK).

Then it’s three Premier League games in nine days – the Manchester derby at Old Trafford (Saturday 14 January, kick-off 12:30), before home matches against Tottenham (Thursday 19 January, kick-off 20:00) and Wolves (Sunday 22 January, 14:00).

While it clearly looks on paper a pivotal part of the season, Guardiola insists ‘many things are going to happen’ before the 2022/23 term finishes.

Asked whether the next six weeks would be season-defining, he added: “Six weeks? Or many weeks?

“In six weeks many things are going to happen, yes for sure.

“We haven’t even finished the first leg [first half of season]. Many things are going to happen, this is my feeling, for all clubs and all teams.”

First up is Thursday’s away clash with Chelsea, one Guardiola says he’s looking forward to.

He added: “Tough game, tough side. Well managed. Stamford Bridge.

“It doesn’t matter the position you are when you travel there always it is difficult.

“But, at the same time, we are looking forward this week, the next two weeks, for different competitions, especially the Premier League the next three games.”
