Pep Guardiola is adamant his City side are focused only on our next game rather than the pursuit of trophies in the closing stages of the 2022/23 season.

City sit second in the Premier League and have reached the quarter-final stage of the UEFA Champions League and last four of the FA Cup.

With Liverpool visiting the Etihad Stadium on Saturday as part of our Big City Weekender, the Blues will be looking to put pressure on Arsenal.

The league leaders are eight points ahead of City having played one game more.

The big City Weekender

It’s set to be an intense end to the campaign, with nine games already scheduled in April and more to come in May and potentially June.

However, the boss is focused only on the next 90 minutes ahead of us.

“It’s the best approach we can have,” he stated.

“The reality is the next game otherwise [winning trophies] cannot happen. I say many times, one team won the treble - Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup because it’s so difficult.

“We have this game, a long week and then a tough schedule with many games. The most important thing is we are fighting for everything, three things, that is so awesome, so good.

“Winning is good but to sustain for 10/11 months is so difficult. Still we are there. In Premier League, there are teams far away but we will see next games.”

Despite the number of matches that still exist between City and potential silverware in a lengthy season that has already included the first ever winter World Cup, Guardiola will not accept fatigue as an excuse.

With so much on the line in the coming months, the Catalan believes the high stakes every time City take to the field will help to focus the minds of his players.

“When we are one or two months to the end of season, being mentally tired this does not exist,” he said.

“Everyone knows if we win the game we are still alive. If we lose the game we will be out. That can happen in November. It can happen in December. It can happen in January. Or it can happen right now in April.

“But it’s good, it means we have done many, many good things in the good position. But when we arrive in the end, the semi-final of FA Cup, the Premier League, the situation we are in in the Champions League against Bayern Munich, you win we are alive, we continue. If not, au revoir and next season we will be back.”
