Pep Guardiola says it will require somewhere in the region of 95 points to be crowned Premier League champions this season.

City are currently top of the table, nine points ahead of second-placed Liverpool, who beat Leicester at Anfield on Thursday.

However, Liverpool have a game in hand and will visit the Etihad Stadium in April for what could be a crucial showdown.

The two teams have been involved in some memorable title races in recent memory, raising the bar in terms of the points needed to lift the trophy.

In 2017-18, City registered an all-time record 100 points, before edging Liverpool out the following year by positing 98 to their 97.

But in 2019-20, it was Liverpool who were crowned champions, finishing with an impressive 99 points.

Jurgen Klopp’s side can reach 96 this season if they win all their remaining Premier League matches and Guardiola believes his team will need to be close to perfect to get over the line and win a fourth title in five years.

“There’s no doubt about that - the margin against Liverpool is nothing,” the boss said on Friday.

“We have to win a lot - more than 90 points - 95, 96 to be champions.

“We can lose, but it’s the way we lose [that’s important]. You can lose in different ways.

“Many times, when we lose, we lose as a great team and we have to continue in this way.

“I was born in Barcelona and their academy taught me everything. The best way, even there, is to think everything can go wrong.

“The warnings to yourself have to be as an individual player or as a team that tomorrow you can go down and lose and lose and lose. That’s the best way to approach games.

“We made an incredible run in the Premier League so far and Liverpool is still there round the corner. That shows how amazing and difficult our opponent is.

“We know, of course, we can lose and be bad and drop points - this is not the issue - it’s how you behave in those moments when you lose games.

“Against Brentford, we were 2-0 up and Kevin De Bruyne, the best player in the Premier League last season, ran 40 metres back to help John Stones at right back.

“We can’t ask any more than that after winning what we have won individually and collectively.

“We can lose, of course we can lose. Nobody always wins.

“The important is being there and knowing we have to win.

“We have to fight to win the Premier League and if we want to win, we will have to win an incredible amount of points against an incredible opponent we’ve faced many times.”

City’s next Premier League assignment sees us travel to Carrow Road to face a resurgent Norwich side.

They currently sit 18th in the table but have taken seven points from the last nine available, with the appointment of Dean Smith as manager in November galvanising their squad.

Guardiola says our 5-0 win at the Etihad earlier in the season means nothing, with Norwich’s improvement there for all to see.

“It was a long time ago [August, when we beat Norwich at home],” he said.

“They have a different manager.

“We lost two seasons ago when we were there.

“At the moment, Norwich’s momentum is excellent - seven points from the last nine - and we are facing them in their best moment of the season.”
