Pep Guardiola says December is a hugely important month, starting with Saturday’s game against second-placed Liverpool.

Manchester City go into the clash at the Etihad at 12.30 (UK) top of the table but with just three points separating the top five.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have been our biggest rivals in recent years and after only finishing fifth in the 2022/23 season, the Reds are set for another Premier League title challenge this season.

Games between the sides have always been fiercely competitive, and Guardiola expects another big encounter.

“With our people, we have to impose our game knowing how difficult it is [against Liverpool] at home and especially away,” he said.

“Of course, we have already played 11 or 12 tough games honestly I could not expect to be in that position at the begin of the season.

“The top five teams are so tight. We are there and it’s an important game and Spurs next week and Aston Villa away.

“December is so tight. We have the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia. January is more relaxed. The positive energy we have for the next moment.”

Klopp and Guardiola have enjoyed a big rivalry since the boss took over at City with the German already in place at Anfield.

City have won the Premier League in five of the past six with Liverpool winning the other and missing out on two titles by a single point.

Guardiola has said the competition with Liverpool and Klopp’s innovations continue to push him and his side to greater heights.

“Absolutely, he made me better, part of when you are many years in this business, him and his teams, here and Borussia Dortmund always been big rivals, good games for both, positive approach and always attractive,” he added.

“He made me a better manager through his teams, and of course the way we play is good with the transitions, the runs, they are a fantastic team, a top side, no doubt.”
