Pep Guardiola believes the tight, tense nature of the title race is firing his players up for the 2022/23 Premier League run-in.

City are currently six points behind leaders Arsenal, heading into this weekend’s Leicester City game at the Etihad, with one game in hand.

Ahead of this campaign, Guardiola oversaw two Premier League title victories in succession across 2020/21 and 2021/22 as he now eyes a third this term.

The boss dismissed the notion that this experience would play a part in the destination of the trophy but believes that his players are inspired by the fact that every game is a must-win.

He said: “The only impact I believe is that everyone knows in their body that if we lose, it’s over.

“This is the best way to compete.

“In every action, in set pieces or transitions, every player is living here because they know they need to win that duel or action or we lose the game. That’s when you have the best.

“For experience I have doubts about if experience counts a lot.”

Guardiola also believes the fact that games are coming thick and fast across three competitions is keeping his players sharp mentally and physically.

We face Leicester in the Premier League on Saturday before Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday and Sheffield United in the FA Cup next Saturday.

This intense schedule is keeping rhythm and focus at a high level.

He added: “Sometimes our experience of games every four days, you are in incredible rhythm and focus. It helps us.

“In the past when we were playing in a lot of competitions it helped us.

“Sometimes playing one a week in our team we would lose the rhythm, when you have Saturday and next Tuesday or Wednesday and recovery, the mind of the players is always here.

“Sometimes when you have two days off, you have to come back and sometimes you lose this type of feeling.

“But at the end of the season I said before, in six or seven weeks it’s all over, the players are doing absolutely everything to keep going.”
