Pep Guardiola says he and the players are excited by the prospect of appearing in the UEFA Super Cup for the first time in our history.

City qualified for the showpiece occasion by virtue of being crowned champions of Europe at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, completing a historic Treble in the process.

As a result, we face Europa League winners Sevilla in Athens on Wednesday 16 August, five days after our defence of the Premier League title begins at Burnley on Friday evening.

It’s a busy start to the campaign, but Guardiola sees it as a pleasure for City to compete for further honours, and an opportunity to add a new trophy to the cabinet.

He said: “I love it. I love to play in the UEFA Super Cup, and also the Community Shield.

“Firstly, because as a Club we’ve never won it, we’ve never won the Super Cup. And of course, to be there you have to win the Champions League.

“Winning the Champions League gives you this opportunity and it’s a pleasure to go to Athens and play there.

“I love it. We like it.”

Before attentions turn to the Super Cup, City have our sights set on getting our third successive defence of the Premier League title off to a strong start.

We could become the first team in English football history to win the top flight title in four successive seasons, but the boss insists it’s too early to talk about that potential record at this stage.

While Guardiola takes immense pride in what the Club achieved last season, he says City’s focus should be on maintaining our standards over the course of the campaign to give ourselves the best possible chance for a sustained push in the final months.

“I said previously before the Community Shield, I don’t want to forget what we achieved [last season]. But you have to know to be from up there to down here and start again,” he explained.

“When we arrived here, the sense was completely different to build something, create something.

“We didn’t expect to win five Premier Leagues in seven [seasons] honestly, and people said ‘without the Champions League it’s not enough’. Okay, now we have it.

“What’s next? Next is Burnley. Vinny [Vincent Kompany] and what they do one hour away from here. Then after we enjoy the Super Cup. No more than that.

“I’m not going to promise you we’re thinking about winning the Premier League or Champions League, it’s too far away.

“Many things will happen in 11 months, not just City but all the clubs will have ups and downs.

“Just to see after an unbeatable season if we will fall down, but not too much. Stay close to our rivals who I have a feeling will be in front of us and then in the last four five or six months, okay let’s do what we have done the last few seasons.

“In the moments we should do it, we did it. I don’t want to do it now, now it’s about not dropping much.”
