Pep Guardiola hailed Kevin De Bruyne for 'a masterclass' goal as City beat Brighton 3-1 at the Etihad – but insisted there was still more to come from the inspirational midfielder.

After an Erling Haaland brace had given the reigning Premier League champions a 2-0 half-time lead, the Seagulls narrowed the deficit early in the second half through Leandro Trossard

It led to a nervy period with Roberto De Zerbi’s side threatening on a number of occasions before De Bruyne settled the contest with a quite stunning 25 yard shot with 15 minutes to go.

The result got City back to winning ways after last week’s first loss of the season at Liverpool on a day which also saw us chalk up our 600th Premier League goal under Guardiola.

But reflecting on the win and De Bruyne’s defining contribution, Guardiola said he felt the Belgian was still not operating at his absolute peak.

“(Kevin) Can be better. He’s not playing at his top level, not yet. He made a fantastic goal but he’s not playing his best,” Guardiola declared.

“He knows. I don’t have to tell him. He’s not perfect, he knows that.

“I spoke with him. The goal is outstanding.

“Thanks to him we didn’t suffer in the last 15/20 minutes when the game was more open.

“The way Brighton play is outstanding. I am a big admirer for Roberto De Zerbi and the way they want to play.

“The players felt that in the locker room - how difficult it was in the second half.

“The turning point in the second half was when Riyad Mahrez had this chance and normally he doesn’t miss it but because it is football it happens. One minute later we concede a goal.

“In that situation the emotions are there against a difficult team.

“In that moment they were better, and Kevin made a masterclass action so we win the game.”

The boss also praised the way City found the way to overcame the challenge of a talented and dangerous Brighton side.

And he said that De Zerbi’s side had presented a unique set of problems for his players as City secured the win to move within a point of leaders Arsenal.

“Today, the game was one of the toughest ones we can face,” Guardiola added.

“They propose the type of game we are not used to. Few teams are used to. We did not have men free.

“They played man to man, so we had to play more direct balls. In general, I am so satisfied with the points because it was a tricky game.

“Compliments to my players because I know how difficult it was. I said yesterday and at half time how difficult this game could be but in the end we did it.”
