Let's play the game and not the occasion.

That was Pep Guardiola’s pre-match message to City ahead of Wednesday’s key UEFA Champions League final league phase fixture at home to Galatasaray.

City will kick off tomorrow evening sitting in 11th place in the composite table among eight teams on 13 points all fighting to avoid finishing in a play-off position.

Only the top eight teams are assured of a passage straight through to the Round of 16.

The sides finishing between ninth and 24th compete in a two-legged knockout play-off in February for the chance to join those top eight.

With so many variables, City know a positive result at the Etihad would give us a great chance of securing that top eight finish and avoiding those two extra fixtures.

However, rather than fretting about different scenarios, the boss says the priority for his players is a simple one.

And he said the Etihad fans would have a key role to play tomorrow night.

“I prefer to have more [points] but it is what we deserve. We need to focus and try to win our game then see what position we finish,” the boss pointed out.

“We’ll see the result in the last 10 minutes and then we will see [what we have to do]. We have to focus on our game, that’s the key.

“We will try to win tomorrow. Galatasaray is leading the Turkish league and all their players are exceptional.

“The quality they have. Osimhen is a top-class player. They link with him. Leroy [Sane] and both wingers are so quick. Gundo, Lemina, are experienced players.

“Galatasaray are one of the biggest clubs and they always have good players.

“We have to make an incredible effort with our fans.

“Every culture is different. Never we face against Turkish teams away. I would love to go there. We went for an historic night but I would love to go to Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, Besiktas.

“What I expect is people come tomorrow and support us.”

Rodri is suspended for Wednesday’s match after his sending off away at Bodo/Glimt last week.

New signings Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo are both ineligible to play in the Champions League until the knockout stages.

Meanwhile Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, John Stones, Savinho and Oscar Bobb are all still sidelined through injury.

Nico has also been absent for the past four fixtures.

However, the boss said the Club would see how the Spanish midfielder’s fitness was after Tuesday afternoon’s training session.

“Today is the last training session. We assess today,” Pep added.
