Pep Guardiola sounded a salute to another hugely impressive display from Phil Foden after City’s fine 4-1 win at Brighton, insisting: ‘It doesn’t matter where he plays.’

The 21-year-old again demonstrated his versatility, playing an advanced role through the middle to great effect at the AMEX Stadium, scoring two goals and creating an assist as City rose to second place in the table.

It was the latest in series of standout display for the 21-year-old who has shone in a variety of positions this term.

And reflecting on our latest win, with Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez also on target, the boss was again full of admiration for Foden’s flexibility and adaptability.

“Some players play in one position, some play football,” Guardiola declared.

“The question is it doesn’t matter where he plays, he plays good. It doesn’t matter. What is important is to understand the game… sometimes we need him right, left. It doesn’t matter.

“Phil in dropped positions is maybe more dangerous because he is so young, but he has the quality to play in the final third.

“He can play striker, false nine, winger right and left. In the last games he has many chances and in front of keeper didn’t take right decisions because is young but I am more than pleased with the performances he has given.

“I like him as a player. He gives us things we need at a times. He has quality to play this role. At Anfield he played as a winger and was our important player.

“He is a midfield player with a lot of sense for goals, the only thing for Phil is to be calm on and off the pitch, because he is still young.”

The boss also reiterated his admiration for Seagulls boss Graham Potter, whom he described as one of the most impressive young English bosses a couple of years ago.

And Pep also highlighted the quality of his Brighton team that City had to overcome in what was a match of two halves with City 3-0 up at the break but the hosts coming strong in the second half.

“When I have an opinion two years ago, I have the same opinion,” Guardiola asserted.

“I like what they do. I liked last season when they played well and didn’t get results and I know him when he was managing Swansea. That’s why I know exactly the victory we had today.

“They make good build up, play in the pickets, have runners high and wide and create space for people in the middle.

“They press aggressively, have courage to play - all the things I like to see as a spectator. I can identify this team.

“He is a gentleman. It’s good for English football to have managers like Graham.”
